dang it my jl audio 12w7 blew!

I spent almost 700 bucks on a jl audio 12w7 and put it in a ported box tuned at 20hz i powered it with my crown 2500 drive core amp and during a sine sweep from bass mekanic when it got down to 10hz it started smoking and fried the thing. That was all the money i had this sucks! I set my mini dsp subsonic filter at 10hz and cranked it i wanted to feel what 10hz felt like super loud and it smoked it. jl audio are over priced junk! Should have got a Fi Q.

I don't think a different driver would have changed the outcome. That much power in a ported boxed with the filter set to low.....bad combination.

i hate to be that guy ... but ...

1) you don't try to play signals below your port tuning.
1a) set your subsonic filter close to port tuning
1b) you won't feel what 10hz feels like in a 20hz tuned box because it would start distorting and the driver will unload
1c) no more sweeps or waves

2) nor do you play sweeps without letting the driver cool off (even above tuning) between sweeps

3) learn the lesson and be the better for it

4) and +1 what Matt said about driver choice ... see 1) and 2)

LMFAO i got you guys! i didnt blow the sub i have the sub crossed at 32hz right now i think anything tuned below 32hz is unnecessary! i am making some sonotube boxes which are super simple and round is stronger than a square box so the box wont flex at all. and im using 3/4" birch ply for end caps and a 4" aeroport. I cant believe you guys thought i blew my sub i know 10hz will blow anything at loud volumes. my crown amp turns red when its clipping so i turn it up to clip level and when i see red i turn it down 2 or 3 notches. i have a ****** kappa perfect simple build which is tuned around 20hz and it sounds amazing but its a piece of crap compared to what im gonna make! thanks guys on this board i learned so much from you guys.
