The Empire goes on strike

D'OH :( The Empire was quiet today, as in silent. The amp is very hot and the power light is blinking red. So it has power, but it isn't happy. It actually looks like I may have had some kind of power surge here last night, as my cable modem was also out of commission this morning, but I had been listening to music source direct so the sub wouldn't have been playing. Just now I turned it on and noticed an immediate lack of sound. I turned off the power to it to see if it will come back on once it cools and have contacted Epik in the event that it does not come back on.

Best of luck with that - that sucks if you need it fixed/replaced. :(

Comment from ADTG about external sub amps in 3...2...1... :D

Yeah, my previous sub was passive and I used a Rythmik amp with it. I am guessing it isn't the fault of the amp itself, but if it has to be replaced it sucks no matter what caused it.

The amp is relatively cool now, but flipped it on and still blinking red light. Not getting a warm fuzzy feeling about it.

Just noticed that my dryer is also dead and no circuit breakers were tripped....

I'd HIGHLY recommend you getting a whole house surge protector installed with proper earth grounding. A protector at the panel properly earthed would have prevented those outside surges from ever entering your home.

For the installation, the earth ground is the up most importance. Consult with TLS guy. He might have installed his own himself and he knows a lot about grounding.

I'm confused is it Empire on strike or Empire Strikes back? (at the budget) ;)

That's a real bummer. Hope it turns out to be something as simple as a fuse.

Its not the grounding thats the issue, its phase to phase surges from the utility. You dont necessarily need a whole house surge protector, as those get costly and often times require you to replace your panel. Individual ones work well and u can use them in places where surges would damage equipment, such as electronics, motors(fridge) etc. Contact your utility and tell them your problem, if their line was at fault, they will often compensate you for damages.

You don't have to replace your panel to install a whole home surge protector.

This one is fine.

We have had some fierce surges here and this unit is fine.

Individual surge protectors are next to useless.

Yes, see, another case for passive subs from Funk Audio or CraigSub. :D

It's time to go back to basics - yes, passive subs. :D

It's The Empire Strikes Back for sure. :D
Yeah, my original title was "The Empire Strikes Out", but that is sort of negative and I am happy with the sub :) Just not getting it fixed...

Can't do whole house protection in an apartment...and it is already the only thing plugged into the high current outlet on my Panamax 5100.

HUGE project at work, so I haven't had 10 seconds to even call them about this. Sent email with no response yet.

Sorry to hear the bad news, hope it all works out.
Nothing works better and cheaper than just unplugging the sub after your done using it.
It works well for me, though I only do a movie night once a week. :)

I can just flip the panamax off from the front, so when it is fixed, I will start doing that.

My house was built in the 50's so who know what condition my electrical is in!! Because of this I regularly hit the power button on my APC to shut power off to my system at night before bed. Can't be too safe!

Sorry to hear about the sub John!!

Those are not destructive. OP has damage typical of a surge hunting for earth destructively via appliances. It found earth destructively via appliances. It existed because a protector that protects from all types of surges (even phase to phase) was not earthed at the breaker box.

A least expensive solution is also the only solution for both types of surges. If a protector is not connected to earth (ie Panamax), then it does not even claim to protect from the OP's surge. Panamax does not claim to protect from that typically destructive surge.

A power switch (like a circuit breaker or fuse) is also ineffective. A surge easily blows through a millimeters gap in a switch.

Only effective solution is to earth that energy before it can enter a building. Superior solutions can be installed in a breaker box, attached to a breaker box, attached to a meter pan, or even rented from the power company.

That's what Chad said to check. Haven't had time to touch the sub, much less eat or sleep regularly with this darn project at work. But those projects pay for all those hobbies so...:)
