The amazing $69 BDP

Costco had the S380 for $68.99 so for whatever reasons I picked one up (on impulse) thinking that I can at least use it for Netflix and stream music, saving the PS3 and Oppo for something else. So far I find this player more than amazing and is probably unbeatable in terms of value at its current price point. It plays SACD and USB jump drive and it does it's job quietly. The only minus is that, like the Oppo, it won't do DD+ 5.1 with Netflix. So for 5.1 movies I still have to use the PS3. It probably doesn't play flacs either but may be I am doing something wrong. This player does almost everything I need and good enough to the point I think I am ready to sell my Denon DVD3910 along with a few DVDAs, may be even the 95. Well, may be I'll hold on to the 95 in case I change my mind on 3D TV.

Frys had one (whose name they didn't list in the ad) for $49 with wifi.

I would definitely get one of those, will search our stores here in Cayman to see if they have any. Hope so as I want a SACD player. How does it sounds playing your sacd's?

It plays SACD just like the other two players I mentioned, that is, I cannot tell a difference, not yet anyway. My Marantz AV7005 cannot take DSD so I have to use PCM. I have not tried the analog out yet but I will eventually.

I have an old BPP-370 coming back from the insurance company after it was dried out and checked. This unit truly was rock solid playing every DVD/BluRay I could toss into it with out even one PROM update. I also use it as my analog CD player using the analog lines in for stereo listening. Sony did a good job on the BDP line.

John mentioned Frys had one for $49 with wifi. That beats the Sony 370/380 on price but I bet that was not a Sony. For cheap BDP (relatively speaking), IMO, only Panasonic can be considered as equal to or better than Sony BDPs.

It just occurred to me... this is the BD player I have that won't stream video properly, and forced me into a Roku (which works perfectly). Just saying. It is also slow and clunky with discs. IMHO a piece of poorly designed junk, and I only chose it because I am (or was) a Sony bigot. (A member of the family used to work there.)

It certainly is not a network player but it streams Netflix, Crackle and others that came with it without issue so far. May be the firmware update fixed some of the issues you had. It does make some noise during spin up of some DVDs but quiet down after. It is not slow at all though, in fact it seems quicker than the PS3.

The only slow BluRay I experienced was the last Star Trek flick. That one takes forever to load.

Sony has pushed down about seven firmware upgrades since I bought the thing, and Netflix (and Crackle) still stall, wired or wireless. I'd replace it, but I'm not much into video anyway and the Roku has been flawless.

I have a BDP-S360 and it's been pretty good, but not perfect. Sometimes I have to unplug it for a min. to reset it since sometimes it plays the disc a very slight bit slower than it should. But the streaming has been pretty good for the stuff I've used, with the exception of Crackle, it only plays the first several mins. of the movie, not the whole thing and I can't figure out why or how to fix it, but it's not a big deal.
