The Event 20/20 are 4 ohms - with the Insignia, I would be careful with
the overall volume level. The Insignia manual reccomends using 8 ohm
speakers, and 16 ohms if you plug in more speakers to the B side. I did
own the Events, and a decent receiver rated to handle 6 ohm loads, will
do a better job with them.

Nothing sounds like a big honkin' speaker except a big honkin' speaker.

Personally, I'd be scouring the local craigs list, rummage sales and whatever else presents itself for a pair of used big a$$ Cerwin Vega! of DCM KX series speakers and a silver receiver. Just look at the back of the speakers to be sure they aren't 4 ohm speakers.

If you insist a new receiver, that Sherwood or Insignia mentioned earlier would be a good bet, what NIB with a guarantee for $100 it can't be beat.

It is going to take some searching, due to a tight budget.
The Boston/Sherwood deal posted above is good.

Also look at some Ebay options.

DCM CX17, I prefer them over the older Paradigm Titans

Thanks everyone for their input. The Dayton Sub and bookshelves have caught my eye. Would i need a receiver to hook them up or could I just run it through my desktop?

You missed out on the DCM CX-17 > which sold for $12.50 on Ebay
last night. And there are no $100 speakers that are built, or sound
close to the Fostgate FA61.0 speakers. Maybe something like those
speakers at Parts Express, might be your thing? :)
I stand corrected about the price, on the Fostgate FA61.0 speakers.
I contacted the Ebay seller, the price is for one each. The picture of
a pair on their site, is confusing.

yea, 8" active monitors would ideal, but pretty much next to impossible to get for $300 a pair

but if insist on NEW 2.1 system here it is:
Dayton Audio B652 6-1/2" 2-Way Bookshelf Speaker Pair 300-652
Dayton Audio SUB-1200 12" 120 Watt Powered Subwoofer 300-629
and this avr:
DENON AVR-391 5.1 Channel AV Home Theater Receiver | Accessories4less

BUT: a Pair of Active monitors listed above will produce much better result
Like I said - This would not be good solution for music, but ok for HT
Yes, you MUST have a receiver or at least an amp to connect these to your source(s) including computer
It could be denon I listed above or less preferred a slightly cheaper Sherwood stereo amp - with more power, but significantly less features.

As long as you are not a critical listener pass the midrange band,
you may enjoy the Dayton bookshelf speakers. They can be modded
to fix that valley after 5 khz. They only have a high pass capacitor
between the woofer and tweeter. Tight budgets can be a challenge.

Unless your desktop has an amp inside that puts out more than a few watts, which I doubt, you're gonna need some type of amplification, particularly since your expectations are not exactly low-level near, field listening. In short, I'd say yes, that would be your most logical option.
