Def Tech BP7004's vs Goldenear Triton 3 Towers

Hey all,

I have in my dedicated theater room a full Def tech setup with the Fronts being a pair of BP7004 and a CLR2300 center plus 2 BP2X for the rears. I have been reading alot of good things about the Goldenear Triton speakers and really was looking into the Triton 3. There are no dealers even close to me so wanted to see if anyone has heard them vs the Def Tech Bp7004 speakers. Would have to sell my setup first so just know doing so research. Thanks for the help.

DenPureSound and his wife compared Triton-2 vs BP7001 vs Mythos ST.

He thought the BP7001 sounded better than both the Triton & Mythos - probably because BP7001SC are bipole design which may give a fuller larger 3 dimensional soundstage to him.

But you can compare for yourself and let us know.

Personally I think they will sound similar since they are both designed by the same Sandy Gross.

I auditioned the BP8060STs against the Triton 2s. Admittedly, not a fair comparison as the 8060 would compare better to the Triton 3s. I think the 8060 replaced the 7004 model? I had to take what I could get in the showrooms.

I ended up going with a pair of the Triton2s, as they blow away the 8060s and I couldn't put that much money on the 8080 without an audition. The real advantage of the Tritons is that ribbon tweeter. If you haven't heard the ribbon tweeter, you owe it to yourself to go audition it. It is silky-smooth and not harsh in the slightest even after long listening sessions.

My "educated" guess would be that the Triton 3 wouldn't be worth it over the 7004. Another way to put it is that if it were my $, then I probably would be happy with the deftechs. If you are seriously interested in an improvement then move up to the Triton 2 (extra $1000) or something better.

Yes not being much a upgrade is what I was afraid of but those Ribbon tweeters really got me excited as ive not had anything like that before. If anyone in the Tulsa area has the Goldenears I would love to come take a listen as the closest dealer to me is in Dallas. I really like my Def Techs and love that I do not have to have a Seperate Sub as this things really get plenty low for me with movies. You know how it is every few years you get the want to upgrade even if you dont need to. lol

I got to compare the Triton 2's against the Def Tech Mythos STS and the BP-8080ST. At the end of the day we came home with the Triton 2's. We just liked the midrange and the highs better plus the soundstage was a little higher than the STS. Pretty much comparable in terms a Sandy Gross design and a personal choice regarding shape and price. But these speakers are used for HT.

As much as I absolutely LOVE the Triton2s I would guess that you would benefit more by getting a "real" subwoofer for your system. The "subs" in the DefTechs are ok but the fact that most of the time the best location for the mains is not the best location for the subs means your not getting the bass you deserve. It's recommended to run those DTs just like any other tower, speaker wire only, small & crossed over at between 60-80hz.

Just a thought if your itchin for an upgrade!!

Otherwise just get the Tritons for the beautiful ribbon they have. But if you do then definately save for the 2s over the 3s. THEN you'll hear a very nice improvement over your DTs.

Upgraditis, huh? Yeah, we all know too well.

At one point, I had DefTech SM450, BP10B, CLR3000, BP7001SC, BP7000SC, and SC Trinity. I was really truly happy with them too. Next thing you know, I have Salon2, KEF 201/2, Orion, Phil3, and now dual Funk Audio 18.0 subs.

I don't think going to GoldenEar or another DefTech is an upgrade at all regardless of any fancy drivers.

Your BP7004 are already great for movies. And if the bass already sounds great to you, don't sweat it just because the rest of us have a million subwoofers. I had the BP7001SC & BP7000SC, and the bass was tremendous. So if the BP7004 have enough bass for you (not for everyone on this forum), then don't even worry about it.

If you want to upgrade, add a separate pair of speakers for just music listening - like me.

But try something else different. You know......like Philharmonic 2 for $2K/pr.

I find the bass is good and plenty for music (2channel). I find that I want an outboard sub for chest-pounding movie soundtracks.

Good point on the separate 2 channel pair, allows you to upgrade and use the budget only on the mains and forget about surrounds. Everyone may not have the room for that though (maybe you don't really have the room for that either )

Also a good point about something different. I love the Tritons and the DefTechs are top-notch. But why get cousins that will have a similar sonic signature. If (when) I buy new speakers, I wouldn't even put the DefTechs on my list since I have something very similar. I want something different for comparison, so I have a stereo pair on the infinity P362s. My next set may even be bookshelves, just to see the difference and make the comparisons for myself.

I know what you mean about trying new things. Not to get off topic but I bought a full set of front 2 Sierra-1 bookshelfs and 1 Seirra center for my living room but at the same time they shipped we sold out house and new house doesnt have the "Wall" I needed to setup my system I was putting together for the prev house. So the only thing I could do for now was to find some tiny speakers to setup on the TV stand below the TV and almost bought that Definitive ProCinema package but then read about the Polk Audio Blackstone TL350 set. Well no one near me sells them but I took a chance and ordered them online and bought a Velodyne Optimum 10 sub to go with it. All I can say is DANG that little package sounds amazing for the price/size and Im sure alot is the sub but it does a great job for what it is. I can only imagine how good those sierra's with the sub would sound as they are still in the boxes.

OK not sure if I will get a response by not starting a new thread but thought I would try. It seems everyone says try out some new speakers and get something different. Well I kinda agree and have been looking around at speaker reviews, etc. I found these Energy RC-70 speakers online and man are they on closeout or what. My queston is in a dedicated room for like 90% movies would a Whole package of the RC line on closeout be a upgrade from my DEF Tech package? Seems the reviews are great and if I pair them with a great sub they might just be a good upgrade from the BP7004 setup I have plus I would save a ton of $$ as these are on closeout which makes the wife happy. Anyone hear both? Thanks.

Upgrade?

Only you will know once you hear them. The reviews don't mean anything if you don't like the speakers you buy.

For example, DenPureSound bought the Aperion Grand towers because all the reviews loved it, including Audioholics & HTM. But after he got them and listened to them a few days, he did not like them as much as his old Klipsch RF83. So he returned the Aperion and auditioned some speakers - DefTech Mythos ST, BP7000SC, BP7001SC, some newer DefTech models, GoldenEar Triton2. He ended buying the BP7001SC because he thought they sounded better than his Klipsch, Infinity, and the Aperion flagship towers.

So regardless of what the reviews say, there is no guarantee you will actually like the speakers more than your speakers.

Only way to be sure is to listen for yourself. Do they offer free trial?

If I had 2 words to describe the DefTech & GE speakers, I would say "fun & exciting". I think they may give up a little accuracy, but they make up for it in the fun and exciting department.
And I think many people actually prefer fun and exciting over accuracy.

Although some people think the DefTech/ GE "sound" just as accurate and detailed as anything out there.

Bottom line, no guarantee based on reviews/ measurements / word of mouth. Gotta listen for yourself.

I recall one member here said that his Zu speakers sound so much better than his Aperion Versus Grand Towers, although the Aperion has much, much better measurements and reviews.
