Hello, I would like to buy a receiver to hook up a pair of extra speakers to my secondary bedroom TV but need one that fits on top of a bookcase that is only 12 inches deep. Does anyone know if such a receiver exists? I want something cheap without all the extras, thanks.

I think many entry level AVR's are a little over 12" deep. I think these will probably work, but you would want to use bare speaker wire instead of banana plugs. You can probably find entry level stereo receivers in the same depth range, but I doubt you will find them to be much cheaper.

These are current year models. If you look at prior year models and refurbs you will find things cheaper.

Some examples -
Denon 1513 - The denon site's url didn't want to work so this is to the audioholics store - https://store.audioholics.com/index.php/denon-avr-1513.html

If all you're doing is hooking up speakers to the TV you don't really need a whole receiver. What kind of speakers and how will you be hooking them up?

If it were me I'd go with one of the above perhaps, and just pull the bookcase out from the wall a half inch to an inch, making either of the above either flush or near flush with the bookshelf. Even if you had a receiver that was 12inches in depth you'd still need to pull the bookshelf out from the wall a little anyways to make room for connections.

The D dimension on those seems too deep.

We need more info, but perhaps one of these:

To compare -
The Marantz 1402 is 14.5" deep.
The Sherwood 772 is 13" deep.

The Emotiva mini-x is 15" deep.
The NAD Visio 2 is ~14.5" deep.

I guess how shallow do you really want the component to be? Perhaps you think about replacing the speakers with actives as an alternative.

That depth criteria is a deal breaker.

About the closest thing I can find that meet that depth is the stuff from the Parasound Z lineup. It doesn't offer a receiver, only separates, and only two channel, and not cheap, but if you simply gotta meet that depth criteria, I can't think of anything else of comparable quality currently available that will do.

Sometimes, what one wants and what's available don't jive. IIWY, I'd consider alternate mounting options...

Put it sideways. Even after you have met the 12" requirement, you will still have connections in the back to make. OR, get something powered like the AudioEngine A5 plus so you don't need a receiver.

Perhaps add a lip or extended shelf at the top of the bookcase, there doesn't seem to be much out there as shallow as you need. Or prop the reciever on its end and put the feet on the wall?

The first half is more or less what I said already. No matter what, even if you find one that is 12 inches deep you'd still need more space for connections. So having one that is close to that depth (13-15 inches) isn't really a big deal since you'd have to pull the bookcase out anyways.

The second half of that isn't a bad suggestion either. Powered speakers would solve the problem as well.

Thanks for the replies. I was wondering about that Audiosource AMP-100 and the Pyle Pro. Will they allow the TV to send sound to the speakers? There is a red/white audio out jack on the back of the TV that I assume would be the source. I am not looking to purchase powered speakers, only looking to utilize non-powered ones I already have.

If all you're doing is disabling the TV speakers and want to hook up some other speakers, pretty much any amplifier in existence will serve you just fine.

Are there any in particular that stand out in the $100 price range? Thanks.

One thing to check first.

You say the TV has the needed red/white analog outputs. That's good.

But, you might want to assure that they are variable: That's to say that when you mute the speakers, the TV's volume control works on the red/white jacks, too. Otherwise, you may have to adjust the voume via the amp.

Not all TV's do. I have one of each, both of the same brand.

I have an amp 100 that I use for the garage, it is actually a very good solution and is considerably smaller than the average receiver. It can switch between two inputs, is 2ohm stable and is a pretty decent piece of gear for $99 (I got mine used in near perfect condition for $50). No ability to use a remote though.

Parts Express also sells the APA-150 and the DTA-100 which are even smaller.
