I have pioneer VSX-821-k receiver (5.1)

Polk Audio Monitor70 Series II fronts

Polk Audio CS2 Series II Center

Bic F12 Sub

But now I am all confused on what kind of speakers I should I get for my rears.

I have read as best as I could on dipole and bipole but I am still confused on which speakers I should get. But I think I might know, I just need some clarification.

So I was thinking of getting the Polk Audio Monitor30's or 40's for my rears.

but then I was thinking lets say I upgrade my receiver to a 7.1/7.2. Then would that mean I would want to buy something like Polk Audio FXI A4 and put them on the sides.

Or would it be best to use the Polk Audio FXI A4 Surround Speakers in my 5.1 setup.

I am just looking for the best surround experience with my 5.1 setup right now

Nothing, that is what I am asking. If I should get monopole speakers and place them on the side or back, or get dipole speakers and place them on the side or rear for the 5.1 setup.

I will be mostly watching movies, action, that type of stuff

The surrounds in a 5.1 system are side surrounds and I'd go with the Polks to get a close timbre match with the mains.

and now im super confused, when I look at speaker setting on the tv, it shows a list that I can change for the size of the speakers (Large/Small)

Well It has front, center, surround rears ,and surround sides, and sub.

But my receiver is 5.1, how can I have surround rears and surround sides ????

Regarding 5.1 the sides are the same as the rears. I believe the 7.1 is where the sides and rears are different.

Well to me its telling me I can hook up 7 speakers to my receiver and not just 5.

I know that there is a B front speaker option but that is different than the rears

You can set the left and right front speakers as large or small but all that means is ("large" setting) send deep bass to the speakers, or ("small" setting) send the deep bass to the subwoofer. It has nothing to do with the actual size of the speakers. I have a very capable sub in each room so I set my towers to small.

With a 5.1 system you usually want your surround speakers to the side because that's where those channels are expected in a video. With a 7.1 channel system you have both side surrounds and rear surrounds.

I know all of this, I am confused on why its giving me the option to set BOTH rear and side surrounds to large or small etc when the receiver can only support 5.1

When you run the auto setup, the receiver will detect the absence of rear speakers and set the parameters appropriately, namely, rear surrounds = 'No'.

What you should to do is read the manual. (specifically, page 20-21 for auto setup and 34-36 for manual speaker configuration). It is very well written compared to the Denon manuals' cryptic instructions. Who knows, you might find a setting or feature that makes life easier or would have otherwise gone unused :).

Help in selecting rears

Hi :

Don't know if you found some rear/side speakers yet. But let me try and clear up a little confusion for you. Your 5.1 Pioneer receiver has only so many amplifyers in it (5) That means you can have 5 speakers connected to the A channel. 2 fronts, 1 center and 2 rears/sides/surrounds. and of course a subwoofer that has its own amplifyer. When you use the B speakers it takes the rear/surround amplifyers and gives power to the B speakers so you no longer have 5.1 sound.(In your 5.1 room) This is for having a pair of speakers in a seperate room or some times called a seperate zone. Typicly for listening to music in 2 rooms with one receive.

Your rear /surround speaker selection. There is a pair of B & W rear speakers(used) on sale on Ebay auction now the price is $200 now and will probably sell for about $250-$300. They go for about $800.00 new. Check them out.

A much better speaker than the polks or what you are looking at.

Good Luck on your speaker selection.

best,

Norm L
