Watched The Last Waltz on DVD tonight.
Highly recommend it to anyone, and to those wondering about Levon Helm.
I remember seeing it in the movies in 1978, can't believe so much time has gone by.

I have always wanted to see that...I was 9 at the time though. :p I'll have to get around to getting it. I don't think I have ever heard a band review of it.

RIP Levon.

That's a great lyric. I somehow ended up with an 8 Track of theirs back when I was around 10 and that tune caught my attention. I remember thinking that their music was somehow not for kids. I liked it.

I've got that Last Waltz on DVD-A. It's about time I listened to it again.

RIP Levon.

I also have The Last Waltz DVD and it's been years since I watched it. I'll have to drag it out again. There are some good performances from some musicians who lived before music videos or YouTube and we have very little else of them recorded on film.

That movie is a great snapshot of many musicians as they were back in 1975 (or was it 76?). Some we never much heard from again, so our memories remained as they were, but others, Eric Clapton & Joanie Mitchell come to mind, had long careers afterward and I enjoyed seeing them as they used to be.

Unfortunately for Levon Helm, we also get to see him smoking as he was talking to the camera. He looked like he smoked heavily back then.

It's funny you mention that. This morning my g/f said something about holding a smoking intervention for a couple of our friends. As much as I doubt it'll work I said I would pass the idea onto their one daughter out of three who doesn't smoke. As a former smoker I know that our friends would rather tell us to eff off than quit. They might not be so willing to say that to their entire family.

I wonder whether that will be any good. Nicotine is very addictive and people have to really want to quit before they have any chance of succeeding. Group support is great after the smoker first decides, on his own, to quit.

My wife's mother used to say "There's a right way and a wrong way to do everything. And the wrong way is to try to get everyone else to do it the right way." Even though I agree with that, my wife often repeats that for my benefit .

I'm still obligated to pass the idea along. As much as I'd like seeing them quit I'll settle for being a thorn in their side. I'm not one of those 'I'm okay, you're okay' friends. I'm down with being a royal pain. If they do quit I'll enjoy them suffering like I suffered. There's a twisted virtue in embracing the joy of others in distress when it's for their own good. :D

After reading your earlier post, I thought you didn't much like the idea of a smoking intervention because they can backfire and make the smoker more defiant & stubborn. If you'll settle for being a thorn in their side, you do have some extra cred for being an ex-smoker who successfully quit. Maybe that extra bit might help.

I saw The Band a few times during the 70's, mostly at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey. My impression was that technically, they were good musicians but it always seemed to me they were just going through the motions. I never got that 'spark' that something special was going to be heard.
