I have 2 kappa perfect builds right now with 2 jl 12w7 in them. I was wondering... If I wanted to try a different DIY sub would that cancel out some of the bass? Is it best that I just stick with 12w7's if I want 4 subs down the road?
The main issue you would run into is the scenario where sub x is being overdriven, while subs y and z are still coasting. In this case you would hear distortion from sub x even though you should have headroom.
But don't be totally dejected by the idea. The above scenario is an issue only if you think you can "plug n play".
Set up your subwoofers as described by Dr Geddes (weakest sub is set up last, with the least contribution to the sound but enough to smooth out response). Different subs can work very well if you set them up correctly. I recommend trying it, after doing some google searching on the Geddes method for subwoofer setup. In theory it should be an improvement
