Playstation Orbis aka PS4

If they don't make it backwards compatible with PS3 games, I really don't see myself buying it, especially if they don't allow you to play used games without paying extra. I think if MS and Sony do stuff like that, they will be shooting themselves in the foot and will lose a lot of sales over it.

I am guessing it is pressure from the game companies. Yes, it will mean the end of Game Stop. I don't think it is a good idea either, but when MILLIONS in sales are on the line, it is understandable why they would force the hand of the console companies.

I predict that the first model or to will be backward compatible. Then after a while, the newer skews will not be, and the first few models will get discontinued.

Then again who doesn't see that coming?

It is going to have to offer something beneficial besides just 4K, since I don't plan on buying a new TV soon.

I only bought a PS3 to use as a blu ray player, but I did end up getting some games for it. So I doubt I'll get a PS4, at least not any time soon after it comes out. I'll still likely eventually get the next gen xbox, but I really hope it retains backwards compatibility, even though once I start playing games on the latest system, I'll likely not end up playing the old games anymore, but if/when I do want to, I want to be able to do so on that console, not have to drag out the old system, or have the old system in my rack taking up more of my precious space.

I actually have an empty shelf in my rack right now because I have no surrounds so no amp for them :) My guess is, I'll wait too, but we'll have to see what the actual features are going to be before I really say that. I have THREE ps3s right now...

It's weird, but I feel technology has kind of killed gaming. Around when the Gamecube and PS2 came out I remember being very excited about the graphical and SQ improvements.

But with the current generation i've become more cynical. Sure, games like Uncharted are just beautiful to look at. But I think it has compromised the gameplay. Not so much that there are no innovators, but rather that the innovators' budgets can't keep up with the industry's aesthetic expectations. The designer of Xenoblade was talking about this, and pointed out that the reason he chose the wii over the PS3 for that game was simply so that they could focus on the game without going broke trying to push the limits.

I almost dread the next gen of consoles. Game budgets will just skyrocket, but it will just further the monotony. It seems handheld gaming is the present, until technology kills that off too.

Sony is trying to kill the handheld with the Vita :D

This the reason I'm a supporter of those independents like That Game Company is for exactly that reason. They don't have massive budgets, yet manage to produce gorgeous looking games. Games like Angry Birds and Bejeweled prove that simple works. Games like Limbo and Journey prove that you can have little in the way of deep story and still provide a game that is interesting and fun. Heavy Rain and LA Noire prove that you can do something other than a standard shooter and make a good game and still push the boundaries. The budgets skyrocket, but that is because they are the new "movies" and have to one-up to sell, and not just against other companies because with budgets like that they have the mentality of "We sold 80 million last time so next time we need to sell more."
