Receiver wont respond to remote commands.
Firmware would fail to update ~finally got around it somehow with a later update.
Audessy multiq would hang and never finish testing~ seems to have been fixed with firmware update. did not work out of box.
Unit cooks at almost any volume~ have always used an external fan to vent around the receiver.
Receiver broken but under warranty~ no one can repair it within 600 miles.
Hello Audioholics, my 708 was working despite a few minor issues listed above. Recently the surround back rear channels have stopped working. I took it to authorized repair and they shipped it away somewhere. When unit was new, surround back channel was louder than normal, until breaking it became inaudible. I have found information of faulty 2010 Onkyo 708's. The Onkyo support tech admitted they were releasing a service bulletin and issues with the 708. The speakers on the rear channel are 10 -15 years old Infinity brand with a 7" cone, they still sound great. Would the infinity speakers break the receiver? I want the unit replaced but they are making warranty repairs. When I get the 708 back should I sell it, the warranty will expire in Nov 2012? I am assuming because the 2010 products were faulty, this 708 will never have a long life. After hearing of the numerous problems I am worried it will break again. Why wont they just replace the unit as per my request. How do I get the unit replaced under warranty so I'm not lost on a 550$ receiver. Will the repair service fix the rear channels and the issues mentioned above? Could the receiver be broken due to settings, for instance 4 Ohms or 6 Ohms and whether or not the system is calibrated properly. I never play at loud volumes for long periods of time. When I do listen to loud music, I don't push it past 85- 86 on the volume setting, and only listen to one album or just a few songs. I have used it to watch movies for long periods of time but usually have the volume set anywhere under 73.

When you get it back sell it while it is in warranty. I had Onkyo TX-SR805 had some of the same problems, hot, fried HDMI parts several times. Had to pay freight sending to have repairs two times and they kept 3 to 5 weeks each time. Customer Service was not much help.Sorry it a shame but Onkyo have gone down hill after they moved the plant from Japan. Look at a Yamaha or Denon next time. I am sure there are other AVR that are good designs. Just sayin what I have experience with. Marantz and Pioneer makes a good AVR. I purchased a last years model Yamaha NIB from local Best Buy and purchased extended service policy. If the unit fries and can't be repaired BB gives me full purchase price in store credit, pick out a new model add a little cash and upgrade. BB deals with the factory and no freight charges. This happened to my50" plasma TV and added a few bucks and came home with a 55 LCD/LED
when Samsung told Conns it was too expensive to fix... extended service policy saved me. I don't think your speakers are the prblem if you have them wired correctly and nothing touching or shorting out the signal.

It was junk before it went for repair, so it will be junk after repair.

If they replace it, it will still be junk.

When it comes back from repair, quickly test it and make sure it works. The never switch on again.

Put it up for sale on eBay as brand new refurbished.

Then get something else.

I doubt your speakers had anything to do with it. Even if they did, it is still unacceptable. Any receiver or amp not unconditionally stable under all loads is not worth owning.

Thanks for your advice gentlemen... I would recommend not to practice in deceitful ways, so I will accept this loss as my own. Unless I can find a buyer who wants to purchase a broken piece of total garbage!!!lol I will never buy Onkyo again. It is still gone somewhere under warranty repair service. I will not call and ask if its fixed yet, the answer to this is no, and any given reason for this answer would be a lie. I would like to try to somehow salvage this garbage, do you have any possible ideas how I could turn this into a positive experience?

Make them fix it under warranty. The sell it, it still has warranty left. You will be selling a functioning unit with warranty left, and there is nothing deceitful about that.

Tell Onkyo to provide you with a functioning unit pronto, or take them to small claims court. Then when you get the unit briefly test it and sell it.

I don't see any other course for you.
