How much power do these need?

That receiver should be fine but you should define your expectations.

Many newbies expect umlimited volume with clarity and these ain't gonna do it. No system will

That system will play reasonably loud and cleanly, but it does have it's limits. All systems do.

The speakers rated by Sony at 89dB and 8ohm.
these numbers tell me this pioneer with 80W into 8 Ohm will be reasonably loud and clear, just expect to listed at ear shattering volumes - you will destroy the receiver and speakers.

Adding a sub will go a long way improving overall sound quality.

yeah- I currently have an Outlaw LFM-2 subwoofer, the above referenced reciever and the infiniti primus theater 5 pack.
I like the infiniti's for movies, but I am underwhelmed when it comes to music, so i was looking for something fuller sounding. I know most people on these forums don't like sony speakers, but i have some 18 year old sony towers, with the tweeter smashed in, that sound better to me than the infinti p143's at 2 channel music. So i was thinking maybe some modern sony towers would be even better, and at the price those could be had at, its tempting. $120 on amazon.

I'm also considering just waiting a few more months and getting some of these: CMT-340 SE Mini-Tower Loudspeaker

I'm guessing the 340 se mains would be way better, than my p143's , but i'm just not sure if i want to blow that much cash.

On another note the LFM-2 is my first subwoofer, and man i never knew it before, but man i LOVE bass!! I'm already getting addicted to this stuff. I want MORE. I'm planning to build a pair of diy subwoofers, prolly some 12-inchers with a 300 watt bash amp, but thats another discussion, and prolly 6 months away.

Don not try play full range on the small p143. Set crossover at 90-100hz and see if you like the results. make sure speaker set to "small"

340SE are better speakers - they would sound louder and much more clear than small infinity.

You know the infinity P362s have a lot more headroom than the bookshelves.

If you really love bass infinity makes some of the best bass producing drivers for loudspeakers, but a 4" driver isn't gonna work for anything outside of a computer desk or a surround speaker.

What about these

I got approval from congress to expand my budget a little, to $300, i still cant quite swing the p362's but was thinking about getting a pair of the emp 5ti towers, there are 6ohm so that makes em easier to power, right? Would my reciever put out enough for the emp's? I would be running them setup in a 2.1 config for now. Also would these be a big upgrade frome the p143's for stereo music? Thanks for all the input guys.

Oh yeah my reciever is the pioneer 521k
110 watt @ 8ohm
125 @ 6ohm

110 watt @ 8ohm
125 @ 6ohm
Those specs are rated at 1000 khz - not, 20 hz to 20 khz
The Pioneer will drive the EMP - however when the volume
is turned up real loud, and the speakers sound strange or
strained or distorted, then turn the volume down.

The speakers will be a nice upgrade over the little 143 speakers.

Pioneer 521

Channels 5.1

Power Output Per Channel(20Hz-20kHz,.08%THD@8ohm) 80

Power Output Per Channel (1kHz@8ohm) 110

Power Output Per Channel (1kHz@6ohm) 125

i pulled the trigger on the EMP 5ti's for $275. I will be taking advantage of crutchfields 60 day return policy on the infiniti's. Yeah I will lose surround sound and I'm getting two speakers instead of 5, but i guess I'm more interested in 2 channel music than surrond sound, and I can always ad surrounds later. I hope they sound good.

Better 2 great speaker than 5 sub par ones.
