Just curoius here, as I use my PS3 instead of a HTPC as well, what the deal on DTS is? I have both my xbox and ps3 connected via HDMI and haven't run into any audio problems. Wiki says DTS gets decoded to LPCM for both the opitcal and HDMI outputs.

The ps3 can decode only certain dts audios if it is coming from an .mp4 format, however even in this format the ps3 will not be able to decode all the audio. Also, most of the decode of audio is done via ps3mediaserver, and when I'm decoding dts via ps3mediaserver it gets transcoded into a lossy format of ac3.

When streaming a .mkv w/ dts without having my ps3 doing the transcoding to a lossy format, then the sound will either not play at all or only certain parts of the audio track will play. To get around this little problem, you need a receiver that can do the DTS decoding for you via optical.

I guess this is some quirky ps3 issue - I play mkvs with dts on my netgear media client and it have no issues passing it thru to avr thru hdmi

btw: There is another solid 5.0 set - I recommended it to few people and they are very happy with sound (and a same f12 sub btw)

Sweet thanks... I wouldn't need those floor speakers then, they take up to much room for my tiny apartment.

Think about some bass - those 4" Infinity's need a sub.

I'm probably going to get the Bic F12, but not at the same time as everything else, I might end up purchasing it a month later. I can manage without a sub for a bit....

I don't update either if it works well for what I need. Since you mentioned having some issues with decoding DTS you may want to try updating to 1.5. There has been some fixes and features added since 1.2, including some DTS related issues. I certainly don't remember having issues probably since 1.3.

I'll give it a shoot, but most likely what will happen is the dts will be muxed to ac3 or another format. Still doesn't solve the issue of dts being played properly.

Are you saying the problem is there only when you use the optical output of the PS3? I have not tried using optical but DTS works without any issue via HDMI.

Anyway, if you are going to update, I suggest you stick with the official (not beta) 1.50 and stay away from the newest 1.50.1 for now. The release date of the 1.50 is 2011/11/20. Good luck.

Nope, that isn't what I'm saying. The sound works perfectly fine out of HDMI, however if you do stream dts to the ps3 via hdmi, the audio format will be converted to a lossy format. To prevent the audio format to become lossy is by passing it thru via optical output. It sound soo much better when playing a movie w/ dts over a optical output compared to an hdmi output.

Im researching items my first surround system and will hooking up a PS3 or Xbox 360 to it (havent decided which to get yet, I just became employed again so all the toys I "wanted" before I now "need") , and if there is any issue connecting either of them to it I feel that would be good to know.

The ps3 issue does not affect the sounds of games.

The problem lies with streaming a dts encoded video to the ps3 via "playstation media server" and not having it transcoded to a lossy format. You do need an optical line to stream dts without it having be transcoded.

Simply no, you have nothing to worry about streaming with either a ps3 or 360.. However, if you are mainly looking to spend money on a streaming system I'd recommend putting your money into a HTPC.

Also, I prefer to stream over my ps3 as it is easier compared to the 360. The 360 does has a bigger gaming collection, but that's all preference. Feel free to contact me if you need help setting up the ps3 or 360 streaming.
