Receiver as a stereo amp

Hello,
Can I use an Onkyo TX-SR702 receiver as an amp connected via L&R preouts from an Onkyo TX-NR709? The 702 has 5.1 preamp inputs. The 702 has a nice beefy PS and amp section, it draws 8.1 amps of current, it's a decent non HDMI receiver. I just don't know what problems I would incur doing this, I don't want the 702 to do any DSP just amplify the preout from the 709, is this feasible? I realize that I would be dealing with two volume controls and that is where I get confused. I would appreciate any input.
Thanks Jeff

The 709 has an excellent amp section as well, why not just use it? what will your speaker setup consist of? To answer your question, yes, but you will have two volume controls and I beleive to seperate analog stages. I could be wrong on the analog stages but someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I hear you my man, I just don't want to retire the 702, I will use it in my wife's candle making shop, just decided. I have an all Ascends setup, 340SE's LCR and 170's surrounds, the 709 will work just fine. Thanks
Jeff
