I purchased this receiver this past weekend, as it had been a couple years since I owned a half descent home theatre setup..

my question is this:

the Yamaha RXA-1000 doesn't say AVENTAGE on it anywhere like the rest of the ones I see online (not even on the packaging)...is this an older model? is it any different internally not as good? should I return it?

the strange thing is that visually the one on the yamaha site has AVENTAGE clearly visible in the top right corner, mine seems to have the same look/functionality, but it has the CINEMA/DSP logo in the top right corner where the AVENTAGE logo should be. Purchased at a reputable dealer.

RX-A1000 - AVENTAGE - Audio & Visual - Products - Yamaha United States
That is odd, look on the back of the one you have and look at the back of the picture on the Yamaha site and see if they are the same.

they look identical
and the box just has RX-A1000
I put an e-mail out to the dealer I bought it from
the features all seem to be there.
I just don't want to regret it in a month when it's too late to exchange it.

also, I have noticed that the audio level doesn't seem to have the volume compared to my old RX-V3900...anyone else notice this?

Your 3900 has 140WPC and the 1000 is 105 WPC. The A2000 or 2010 is more like the power the 3900 has. Unless you have speakers that 100 WPC or less
return the A1000.

Using an SPL calculator and some guess work off his signature, it shows a difference of about 2dB for the additional 35WPC. Isn't 3dB supposedly barely audibly different?

some interesting information, I'm in Canada, and have been searching the Can Yamaha site, I go to the US and bang, there it is (RX-A1000 - RXA Series - Yamaha - Canada) the Canadian Model shows AVENTAGE on the face, the US does not, and has no mention of it, the canadian site is all about the AVENTAGE. is this jsut a name ore more than that, some technology that isn't in the US counterpart???

I have read that too... not sure. But when my friend loaned me a 100X5 HD AVR(my HD Onkyo 805 was in the shop, again) on my Klipsch and watching Blurays when I went to myYamaha HD RX-V1900 130X7 I noticed a difference when driving all 5 of surrounds useing my SPL meter. I liked having the extra power so I did have some extra power or "Head Room" as they call it. And my Klipsch Heritage speakers do not need a lot of power to play loud. But I did notice a difference having the extra 30 watts.
Not many of the AVR really have all the power they claim when all the amps are powered up on Bluray movies. I think it's better to have extra power then you need so you don't have to push the amps so hard. My thinking was the AVR would run cooler and last longer because it was not being near maxed out. I am retired so I have my equipment on all day and into the night so I added a fan and nothing on top of the AVR for venting space. I got off topic about the venting .... heat etc but it helps. My 1900 stays cool even after several movies in a row and shaking the den :D

Fair point about the headroom and possibility of driving all channels hard.

I'm actually curious how this all works out in the real world as opposed to using the calculators as I myself have an RX-A800 which is rated for 95W and my speakers can handle much more. Thinking maybe at some point I'll get an external amp for the front 3, but I'll have to leap before I look so to speak as I don't really have a solid basis for comparison.

Back on point, I'm going to check my receiver when I get home to see what logos are happening on the front. matty76 has me curious.

got a response back from yamaha

"Hi,

The RX-A1000 did not have the aventage badge in Canada.

Regards,

Yamaha Customer Support"

I guess that answers my question...sort of, so what is the AVENTAGE all about? if this is supposedly in the same line of receivers, was it an afterthought? is it just a marketing gimmick?

If I remember correctly from all the reading I've done, the AVENTAGE tag was basically denoting their receivers for "Pro-Installers" or some such, and they come with an extra year of warranty. But, it sounds like you have one, it just doesn't have the stamp for some reason.

what I find strange is that at -20bd on my 3900 it was audibly nearly too loud to listen to, on the new receiver, the volume is nearly half cranked before it starts getting loud. I'm listening through a brand new pair of Paradigm Studio 20's bi-wired. are thy just not as efficient as the Monitor 3's that I used to own?

I read today about changing a few settings: turning off the Auto DRC
and check the auto trim levels, so I will be playing with this thing tonight to see if I can get a few things sorted out...damn I hate having this pdf manual, thank god for ipads...and Steve :)

To be honest with you if your RX-V3900 is still working like it should I would rather have it then the RX-A1000. What does the new A1000 with less power have that your 3900 does not???? I was looking at the A2000 when I found my new/older model 1900 at a Best Buy that had some left over.

been a couple years since I sold it, had different priorities at the time. Now I'm at a point where I have the space and I can once again enjoy a modest descent setup. Always nice to jump back in with somewhat current features, as I remember there were still HDMI compatibility issues with the 3900 that constantly drove me crazy.

I have read that a few 3900 owners had some issues but never paid much attention to it as my 1900 has been a plug and play. I think Yamaha had a firmware update that cured some these issues. From what I have read the A1000/3000 were very good units. I wanted the A2000 but I got such a great deal on the new/old 1900 I went for it. I don't need a AVR that connects to the internet. Most of the one's that do seem have more issues. After my Onkyo 805 failed three times(fried HDMI parts) and freight to be repaired. I purchase local now. If there is a failure the store deals with the factory and if it is unrepairable I get full store credit and pick out another AVR and drive home.
My old 2003 2400 still works great but it's a non HDMI or HD or it would still be in the den...bedroom use now. Enjoy the new Yamaha.

I would have jumped to the latest model if it weren't for the $500 discount (NIB) in this one, after playing around with it tonight I think it was a wise investment, seems to do all that I would ever want it to...I just don;t understand in this day and age why they can't fit them with a wireless network connection (although I do understand there are technical reasons behind it)

You could get a cheapy wireless bridge to make it pseudo wireless. Might be useful if a long cable run isn't viable.

Forgot to check my receiver last night. Will try to remember to check tonight.

Wife read this post as she wants to stream movies from our PC or Lap Top (wireless) to our 55" TV and use the Yamaha RX-V1900 HD AVR for audio(listen to our HT speakers) movies from Itunes I loaded for my Ipod. Sorry to go off topic.... you got me to thinking  what will this cost me? I just looked Yamaha does not have any updates for the 1900... it's Big Brother the 3900 does.

I've found the easiest solution for streaming movies/content from PC is through the PS3 using Nullriver, I should note that by PC I really mean Mac Pro. It's almost too simple, and streams HD content without any hiccups, you can also access your itunes library, and if need be PS3 has it's own web browser as well. I have a Sony BXR something or other, with network capabilities (although there is compatibility issues with the D-Link system I bought) looking forward to trying the iphone dock for the Yammy.
