Help with WAF. Decorate my SVS?

Need some help everybody. I have a SVS Cylinder sub, I think its the PC12 NSD. Anywho, we had to rearrange our living room and it is now more noticeable, so my wife wants to put a fake plant or something on top of it. I'm concerned since the cabinet is ported/vented from the top that even with some airflow, the reduced airflow from having a plant up there might in some way damage it. Anybody know anything about this?

Of course I know it will rattle and make noise from the vibration, which will drive me crazy and she won't care. I'll just have to move the dumb plant when I'm listening/viewing. Don't even get me started on how I'm now unable to correctly place one of my surrounds :mad:

I would not place anything on top of that sub...If the plant leaks it could leak in through the ports and on to the driver.

Two possible options, maybe a tall tree like house plant or a hanging plant strategically place in front of it. The other would be if you could lay the cylinder down.

You could wrap it in a colorful floral pattern....or, I could take it off your hands for a cool $75??
 
Put TWO plants on top of it to either side of the port.

Given the amount of love shown for everyone's gear around here, I would think the more likely recommendation would be to upgrade and/or sell the wife :D

Wrap it up in nice vinyl wrap that blends well with your decor..

MetroStyling.com has lots of great stuff. This stuff is used in automotive applications where its exposed to various elements, and still holds up well.

Would be perfect for in-home use;)
 
Fortunately this is not a situation I have to deal with, as my wife likes the audio system about as much as I do, and let's me spread out the equipment over about a third of the area of the entire family room, including thick cables out in the open, and the CD player and DAC/pre-amp on an end table next to my listening seat on the sofa. Of course, she's taken over the entire bonus room with her drum kits and piano, and has now taken one of the spare bedrooms to store accessories and drum cases. I do wonder where she thinks she's putting the vibraphone she wants so badly. :)

Anyway, Tim, the one right solution here is for you to explain to your wife that the subwoofer is an important and expensive piece of equipment, and a plant on top, fake or otherwise, is not going to hide the fact that it is a large, black, non-decorative cylinder. I would show up with flowers or her favorite token of affection and ask for her understanding in this situation. If that doesn't work, where she is so insensitive to your feelings, you have more problems than an ugly subwoofer, IMHO.

If the plant is fake, so there's no water involved, covering that port is unlikely to damage anything, but it may change the characteristics of the low frequency response of the sub, or it might make funny noises as air blows past the plant. Either way, this seems like a silly mitigation to the appearance problem.
 
If you drop a leafy plant on there, it will DEFINITELY be blowing the leaves around.

The plant idea sounds like it could do more harm than good.

Of course, the third idea is my favorite of all - just tell her "nope, it's fine just the way it is." :D
 
If you place a "stand" on the top, much like there already is one on the bottom, with sufficient clearance there won't be any negative impact on the sound and then you can place a plant or whatever else on top of that.

You'd have to find some good way to secure the new stand though. If it's next to a wall, you could attach a shelf to the wall. Make it round to match the sub and it might look extra nice.

So, uh, that means you're looking for a new wife? :p Don't need the screen then...

My personal answer is always "That's how it is." She has no say in it. My previous sub was a bigger than even a SVS 16-46 cylinder, and it was in the living room for years.
 
You may consider something like an end table for your SW though.
I did that in my room, but my SW is a boxed one, but still you could think about something similar for yours, with the WAF seal though ;)

Just wrap it up in some other grill cloth..im sure the wife would appreciate something that matches..

Women like symmetry. Order another one.

Show her pictures of larger more invasive subs that you could have gotten.

Show her pictures of hotter younger women that you could have gotten.

Don't shave for a few days and cut the sleeves off of a few of your shirts. Break wind at every opportunity. Remind her that you're a man and she's dang lucky to have you, that subwoofer, and a house to put it all in.
