Yamaha HTR-6250 Tuner Frustration

Hello,

I recently purchased a HTR-6250 Yamaha AV Rec. I'm not able to pickup all local stations, there are two i'm able to recieve only and one is somewhat hashy. I'm using the stock wire antenna that comes with the unit itself.

Does anyone know if there's custom settings within the menu or a firmware upgrade to correct this issue? The thought of running a antenna outside the house doesn't apeal to me.

On a note, my sony Portable is able to recieve all the stations within my area and further away no problem. Very unusual.

What I Did.

The stock wire antenna is a next to do nothing antenna. An outdoor antenna is the best option, but not the most convenient and not always possible. Try hooking some "rabbit ears" to the system and see if that does the trick. That is what I did on my receivers and things work good. Another option is the FM specific antennas that TERK makes. They have a long history of at least blowing away the stock wire antenna if not completely solving the reception problem.

Thanks for the very informative post. I've researched those Antennas and they begin at a hefty price but I'm sure they are most then worth the value. It's hard to chew the expense of the AV Rec and the performance its providing. But, that being said, its worth it.

Now just to find the correct best model of the TERK series AM/FM.

It's mostly determined by your antenna's location in relation to the transmitter.
Use this first: FM Fool - FM Signal Locater
The best tuner in the world, won't perform well in a bad location, or if the transmitter is too far away, blocked by mountains or metal structures.
A quick rule of thumb: The higher your antenna the better. A roof mount will be best, next would be attic placement.
A drawback to powered antennas like a Terk. They also amplify the noise.

That's true about some amplified antennas. The TERK antenna that I bought though is not amplified. It replaced a "wire" and does a good job. Rickster71's comment about location and distance is very crucial.

A couple of questions for you..
1. What do you use as antenna for TV?
2. If it is a traditional outside antenna, a 2-set coupler can be used to connect the FM tuner.
3. If you are using cable, some cable providers actually make certain FM stations available on-line through the cable.
