WTB: Sound Dynamics 200Ti tweeter

When I blew a tweeter on one of my 200Ti's, it sent me down the road to audioholism. Both speakers have been sitting in my basement for a couple of years and SWMBO has been telling me to get rid of them. I just can't bear to do that. There are no tweeters for this model available at Klipsch (who bought API a few years ago). The few they had were all DOA.

If anybody has one, or can direct me to a possible source, please let me know. The part number is: 5DR53021

Do you know if they made the tweeter or sourced it? My guess is it was sourced which might give you more options.

This might be a good reason to substitute a different tweeter and modify the crossover. Do you have any photographs and specs for the speakers?

With that many dead tweeters you are probably better off doing a mod.

I can take a photo, but as for specs, I only have the basics: 3/4" titanium, ferro-fluid cooled. I'm assuming it was sourced, because if I recall correctly (I don't have it in front of me right now), "Made In Japan" was stamped on the back. These speakers were manufactured in the early 90's. I think the tweeter must have gone out of production quite a while ago. When my local shop ordered one from Klipsch, the one they sent was DOA. So, the tech called Klipsch, someone checked the remaining spares (there weren't many) on the shelf and they were all dead! They assume that all of these tweeters arrived dead from the manufacturer, were put on a shelf and remained there ever since. I'm hesitant to blame the quality of the tweeter for its demise - I'm more inclined to chalk it up to abuse. Here's a brochure I came across during my search. Does it provide enough info to indicate whether it's worth the effort?

You have a problem because you have an odd ball shaped tweeter chassis.

You would never make a really nice neat job installing another tweeter. If your not concerned about cosmetics the job is potentially doable. So that is something to think about.

This tweeter is a potential replacement as long as it can be crossed over at least as high as 2.5 kHz.

Yes, when you mentioned installing a different tweeter, that was my first thought - the unique mounting arrangement. I have a surplus of speakers already, so I don't need them for myself. Anything I do with it now, will be an effort to avoid ditching them and maybe I would give them to a friend or relative. Even if I had both speakers in fully functional condition, I doubt they'd be worth much. Probably not much more than the cost of a new tweeter. Although I hate the thought of junking them, I don't think I would go with a different tweeter - I'd have to buy 2! I'm not about to invest that much into this. So, if I can't come up with an OEM tweeter, I'm afraid they'll consigned to the dust heap.:(

Thanks a lot for your interest, Doc!

If you don't have a use for them, this is way too much trouble! I would save the woofers and sell them or get a woofer tester and design yourself a set of speakers round them as a learning experience.

You could try a couple of these and see what happens.

That's an interesting idea. Although the surround foam on the woofers looks to be in mint condition, after 20 years, would they need to be re-foamed?

Not all foam rots. If it is fine leave it.

Any luck?

Hi.
I thought I'd take a chance on an old thread.

I recently blew a tweeter in my SD 300ti speakers, and am looking for a replacement myself. Did you ever happen to find the original, or another tweeter that is suitable that you might be able to point me to?

Alternately, if you still have a pair with one good tweeter, would you be interested in selling them or their parts? :)

Thanks.
~Jacob

The Ti200!

I had this speaker system for quite a while and I can feel your frustration as they sounded SO good while they lasted.

I'm not an Audiophile by any definition but they definitely sound better than the other JBLN38s I have. The highs were more spacious and I'd get the same kind of soundstage that the AudioTechnica AD700s gives.

I need to figure out how to package it so that it goes properly in the mail

I was in the same boat as you with one blown tweeter. I replaced both tweeters with a new Vifa X25 pair. It's pretty ok, but the signature has definitely changed. The vifa's are good for the money but... the high hats in my music sound less metallic
