Didn't Philips release a display with that aspect ratio a few years ago? Or maybe they only talked about it.

I think this was already mentioned in the CEDIA 2012 thread.

I'm kinda wondering now if display manufacturers will drop the 16:9 aspect ratio for the 22:9 aspect ratio...

Highly doubtful that all manufacturers will switch.

I'm thinking the film industry will determine whether or not this will become the new standard... I think this is ultimately sway the manufacturers.

The film industry doesn't care how you watch at home. They want you in the theater, since that's where they want to make money. For home, as long as you buy it, they don't care what you watch it on.

If the shift to OLED does actually come about, I think that could be a factor as well, since I think it will be easier for them to gear up for a different ratio as opposed to the existing setups for LCD already. I am actually a fan of the even wider aspect ratio, so I wouldn't mind, but I am not sure if enough of the public would agree. It is fine for movies, but what about TV? Broadcast would also have to accommodate that ratio with their shows.

Vizio demoed several of these displays LAST YEAR at CES then failed to bring them to market. Despite the hype, and I'm sure a few sales, it's really not ideal at all. A 50" TV in this aspect ratio will deliver a smaller 16:9 image than a 46" TV would. That's really not large enough for most HDTV viewing beyond six or seven feet away. A 70" or larger may be acceptable with that aspect ratio, but once again, it is mainly about viewing movies instead of HDTV.

I want a lot more HDTV then I do movies on my flat panels. I would be super stoked on seeing more 2.35 native front projectors though.

I thought blu ray sales were part of the industry as well.

I never thought of HD TV when I posted this. I suppose they would stick to the current format if its only going to cost them more in the long run to switch formats.
