Center channel speaker dropped now sounds blown

A friend of mine recently had someone mount his center channel, he has been running the other 4 speakers with no problems.

He has the following receiver
Yamaha RX-V667
with these speakers
Infinity Primus™ Theater 5-pack II

Well the guy ended up droping it from about 8ft and it landed on stone a stone slab (its going above TV which is on stone fireplace) it took a hard hit on the side.

to me the center sounds like it is blown crackle/popping sound,
could this be a result of it being dropped?

Umm I would say 100% yes. That kind of drop could have done anything from damaging one of the drivers or cracking the cross over. I think MR. installer should replace the speaker.

The drivers are around 30 bucks and easy to replace, but there may be more broken than that.

If the speaker sounded fine, then fell 8ft onto stone, now sounds like crap....my guess is that the bad sound is from some other reason.
Has it been raining there lately? It could be from the moisture.
Lightning lately? Maybe a surge...
I doubt its from that huge fall. JK!!

Your initial post led me/us to believe that all was fine before the speqker was dropped. It's impossile to now blame the bad sound on the fall. IT could have easily been broke from the get-go.

If it's that new, you might try to get it fixed/replaced under warranty but, I gotta tell ya, if they see any physical damage they might be somewhat skeptical, even if it was damaged beforehand.

i was taliking about the other 4 speakers have been running with no problems since the center was hooked up later.

Yea I cant return it there are marks on the outside from the fall.

I am looking into replacing the drivers and crossovers, is this something I will have to get directly form infinity?

I found some of the parts on the Infinity website

but I am not real sure on what the part numbers are it shows 4" mids, and crossover but not sure if they are the same for all the speakers.

Since there are 2 mids in the center channel I would think they may be 16 ohms each wired in parallel to bring it down to 8 ohms, but not sure.

Have you dismantled the speaker and inspected the drivers and crossover and tested each component?

That is the first step.

Know exactly what parts you need before looking for parts! That is just elementary.

If it fell that far, either the magnet shifted or the pole piece shifted, assuming the frame isn't bent. If the frame is bent, it doesn't matter- the speaker is toast. The crossover should be inspected but really, the installer owes him a speaker, out of his own pocket or through his insurance. If he doesn't have insurance, it will be a good learning experience for him- this is a classic case of someone who should be insured. If he really wants an eye-opener, ask him what would happen if he's working on a big, expensive house and he causes major damage- he's not going to actually own anything for a long time.

took out the drivers today, and on one of them there is some damage, half of the basket actually seperated from the magnet.

Check the other driver for gap rub, as the magnet may have moved on that also. You likely will need one or two mid bass drivers. The tweeter is probably OK and if there is no physical damage to the crossover, that will be OK as well.
