ONKYO TX-SR604 for DVD & Blu-Ray Players??

My OLD (4 years old) ONKYO 604 is working fine, but I wanted to hook up a blu-ray player, and need some way to add the blu-ray and to still use the DVD channel for my OLD DVD player with the NEW Blu-Ray player.

I plan to buy a Blu-Ray with Component Video output, because I have several unused component video connections on the 604.

Anyone know how to create a command to switch back in forth, using the same DVD button on the front of the ONKYO?

I do still have my 604 manual, but I cannot figure out the commands to make this happen for switching back and forth.

On page 36 of the manual it talks about connecting ONKYO RI Components, but I am not sure if this will work for me. It does say that when playback is started on a component connected via RI, the AV receiver will automatically selct the component as the input source, and it shows a CD Player connected to a DVD Player then connected to the back of the 604 using the RI remote control location. Maybe my new Blu-Ray could be a CD PLayer in this picture?

Thanks for your help, Thomboy

Not exactly sure what you are asking? What DVD player and how is it connected? Are you talking about HDMI or analog connections and is it for video, audio or both? You should be able to use either of them on any input and relabel them to whatever name you like with that receiver. The blu-ray player will be more capable than your DVD player, so focus on getting that one connected the best way first.

Using SONY DVP-NC85H High Definition DVD

I am using a Sony DVP NC85H DVD player, and it is hooked up to my ONKYO 604 using composite cables, and an optical sound cable. When my wife wants to play music on the DVD player, she has to turn on the DVD player, then push the DVD button on the front of the 604 to hear her music on the DVD player.

My question is: If I hook up a new (not purchased yet) Blu-Ray with Component Video outputs, and then hook up this Blu-Ray to my 604, will the 604 know what to play when I push the DVD button on the front of the receiver, if only the Blu-Ray is powered up?

I plan to use Component Video for the Blu-Ray for video only when I find one to hook up to my 604 receiver as I have lots of component video posts on the back of the 604 not being used. Please remember that my DVD player is hooked up using composite, not component cables, so the Blu-Ray should get a better picture with component cables, yes?

Thanks, does this answer your questions?

If you mean you want to also keep the DVD player connected and assigned to the same DVD input selector, then No. The receiver has a priority scheme for when multiple video signals are present (and I don't remember what it is - check the manual) and if the first priority is component video and only the BluRay is powered on you'd get its video BUT you wouldn't have audio because you cannot assign multiple inputs to one input selector (if using digital audio connections).

But all of that is way too much trouble anyway. You have many AV inputs and they can each be assigned to a combo of component video and digital audio. Just use 'DVD' for the BluRay and use a different input such as 'Video 1' for the DVD player.

- BluRay connected via component video assigned to the 'DVD' input selector and optical (or coax) digital input from the BluRay to one of the optical/coax digital inputs also assigned to the 'DVD' input selector.

- DVD player connected via composite video and whatever type of audio connection you want and assigned to some other AV input selector like 'Video 1'.

RI allows convenience features similar to HDMI-CEC (but predates the emergence of HDMI-CEC). It does things like turn on the AV receiver and change to the input the DVD player is connected to if you turn on the DVD player. It will also power down the DVD player if you turn off the receiver, dim the receiver if you dim the DVD player, etc. It's not applicable for what you want to do.

Component Video and Optical Coax

My TV is assigned to Video 1, so I can use video 2 for the blu-ray, but I think I understand now.
I will get the blu-ray and hook it up and assign it to the DVD input, then assign my DVD player to Video 2.
Yes, I have 3 optical inputs for my coax, so yes, I can use one for the DVD player and one for the Blu-Ray player, and put them both on different Component Video inputs, rather than using composite for my DVD player.
This should improve my picture for HD DVDs, not Blu-Ray, which will be on another component Video with its own coax for sound.
I think I am getting it, but will buy the blu-ray with component video out, and then report back in a few days.
Many thanks for the kick in the seat of my pants, because I needed it.
