Gaikai: Microsoft or Sony Leaving Next-Gen Console Race
GlocksRock Audioholic Spartan Jan 12, 2012 #2 I think it's all just speculation at this point. I wouldn't expect to see any new consoles to be on the store shelves until 2014.

j_garcia Audioholic Jedi Jan 12, 2012 #4 Well, with those new quad 1.5Ghz snapdragon processors, they are saying they could give you something comparable to a 360 built into a TV very soon. There is at least one service already that has just a little connection box and a controller and you play the games via their service, so it may very well be that the physical console is a thing of the past.

Click to expand... Funny how history repeats. The internet TV with all it's capabilities and now built in gaming. It reminds me of the TV's with the built in VCR and DVD players and how difficult they were to repair. It should get interesting.

Yeah, but the difference here would be that there would be no moving parts except maybe an optical drive, but basically I'd expect something more like a "giant tablet computer". jonnythan said: Why on earth would Gaikai have any inside information on this? I HIGHLY doubt either will be dropping consoles anytime soon based on the amount of revenue they generate for these companies. Until they have the next "thing" to replace them, consoles will be around in some form. We will definitely be at least one morer generation of both.

GranteedEV Audioholic Ninja Jan 13, 2012 #8 You couldn't pay me to buy a Microsoft console. If Sony/Nintendo ever left the hardware game I'd pray for them or their 2nd/3rd party developers to develop for the other brand's system.

Ares Audioholic Samurai Jan 15, 2012 #9 I'm not surprised by this move by Gaikai since they just recently partnered up with LG for the cloud-gaming service that will be available sometime soon on LG Smart TV's. So with that bit of info in mind I call BS on Gaikai.

avnetguy Audioholic Chief Jan 15, 2012 #10 I can't see either Sony or Microsoft giving up on consoles just yet and I"m pretty sure we'll get news before 2013. Of course if they're still making good sales figures on the current consoles and neither one of them tries to get a jump on the other by releasing new hardware, it could be a longer wait than expected. With successful releases like MW3, which I'm sure helps console sales, both makers may just decide to milk their current setups for a while. Steve P.S. I dread the day when TV makers include gaming hardware, I'll be avoiding those units if at all possible.

Damn Noise! Audioholic Intern Feb 1, 2012 #12 I own a PS3, Xbox 360 and a Wii (and others) but to tell the truth I only play the 360 because of the better on-line experience...Playstation network is free but is glitchy at best. Dont get me wrong my PS3 is awesome (80 GB "fat") but the games leave something to be desired. my .02 p.s. the Wii was a waste of money.

New Super Mario Bros, both Zelda games, Metroid Prime, Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Super Smash Bros Brawl, World of Goo, Rayman Origins, Xenoblade..... Just the first party titles alone seem to make every Nintendo console worth owning.

MinusTheBear Audioholic Ninja Feb 1, 2012 #15 You won't see Sony coming out with a new console anytime soon since they stated previously they want a 10 year life cycle with the PS3. Also given the fact the only real other competitor for them is Microsoft and they recently announced they will not be releasing a new console in 2012 so even if Sony has a console in development they will be holding their cards close to their chest. Nintendo is on a totally different cycle and the niche they provide to casual gamers really won't determine what Sony or Microsoft will do in the future. I could careless what Nintendo does.

The new XBox is coming for sure. A new PS3 likely isn't even a possibility for a few years, since they said the PS3 would have a 10yr life cycle.

Except it in mid to late 2013. Expect the next wii to be released even before that.
