2 Things: New TV and One With with a green line problem

I'm going to get that 70 inch Sharp that's out. SAM's and Costco both have the 120hz version for just under 2K. I'm going to retire the 65 DLP and probably donate it to my church since I don't see making any money from selling it.

The 70 incher ranged from about $1,899 to $2,700. What are the main differences? I think the expensive one is 240hz but I didn't notice any other major differences... 3D? Anyway, advice is welcome.

Now... I have a 47 inch Visio in the guest bedroom. it's about a year old. I turned it on to find a green line going right down the middle of the screen. Is it trashed?

I was looking at the Sharp 70" series too - saw it in person at Fry's. It's enormous and with speakers on each side it will cover my entire front wall. I want it (or something like it). My 52" is tiny.

The price increases as incremental features are added. The 32U is 120 Hz and the 34U is 240 Hz and the 35U is 240 Hz plus 3D. You can compare them at sharpusa.com.

The bottom end 32U is probably the best bang for the buck.

Re green line on LCD: My 52" Toshiba occasionally shows a vertical red or yellow line but you can't see it unless you are standing 1 foot away from the TV and it's not always there. It could be stuck pixels or it could be the video source. It may be a sign that the TV is slowly developing troubles.

Seriously, I have no life.

It needs at least one new panel and may be two. Probably not worth it on a Vizio.

I thnk only paid about 900 for that tv a year or ago. I'm not going to worry about it too much. I'll try some different power sources and run a blu-ray and see what happens. Worse case, I'll give it a swift kick and some sweet talk.

I think the 120hz model is fine for me. I'm not too worried about it. I'm so stupid though. My wife hates the DLP. She's hated it from day one and rarely watches anything on it. I was sorda talking tv stuff during the Macy's Day parade and strategically said how much I like the high def picture. She said the "tv sucks. I can't see it from an angle when I'm in the kitchen."

Instead of capitalizing on the moment, the smart a$$ in me said, "When are you ever in the kitchen?"

An elbow to ribs, a hearty pinch to the soft skin near my armpit, and the silent treatment that followed may have set me back a bit. I'll probably wait until after Christmas anyway to see if the prices really do drop in mid Jan.

Why would anyone in their right minds buy the 70" Sharp LCD?

Don't you know that they have the 80" model out!?!?!

For the incremental price difference between the 32 and the 34, I would likely opt for the 34. Typically it's just a couple hundred bucks. The 3D adds a fair bit more to the price.

Because my wall is only 86" wide and with speakers on each side a 70" (63.5" wide) pretty much takes up the entire wall. ;)

I'm seeing the 34 at about a $500 to $600 premium. My local stores have the 32 (120hz/non-3d) at $1,900. Considering I'm averaging a 3 year turnover on TV's these days, it just doesn't make sense money-wise... especially since 3d means zero to me.

I looked at the 80". In 3 years, when I end up getting rid of the 70 for whatever reason... which I know will happen since something so much better will be available for a lot less.... I'll move up in inches. Right now... there's no need to pay the nearly 2K premium.

What gives? I just went to SAM's Club and Costco and the 70 inch Sharp went up in price... to $2,300!!! It was at just under $2K. I also looked online and most places are showing it at the $2K+ price for the 120Hz.

Hmmmm.... I thought prices were supposed to drop?

I don't even care that it didn't drop... I just didn't want it to go up!

That's really good pricing to see them under $2,000 for a display that large. My cost is way over that. Not sure how stores do it and make any money at all.

I think it's a steal at $2,300 but it's hard for me to pay that when I just that TV at both SAMS and COSTCO for under $2K.

I'm woindering if it's the super bowl phenomenom. We'll see. I got to see the 80" again and it looked really nice. I just don't think I can fit it on the one wall. I would have to flip my room around, but I had all the wiring run to the new wall where things are now, plus I have the wall painted dark as an accent wall which I couldn't really do if I changed wallls.

I'll wait a few weeks and see how the prices shake out.

Every TV I bought on Black Friday (3 of them) has been significantly more online since then. I spent $1,200 on a 42", 46", and 50" display, and that would run my close to $2,000 to buy right now. I think the time right near Black Friday is THE time to buy every year if you want the best deal within a 12 month window. Some deals will take luck, but others are just out there to get.

That is, hopefully, when I can score a 80" Sharp at a great price next year.
