Speaker System for less than 2K

It sounds like you want to like the Aperions more, but only because they have a bit more prestigious name brand than Polk in hi-fi audio. Well, you have to make a decision, what speaker actually sounds better to you or what is just a more respected brand in the audio community. If the Polks sound fine to you, I don't understand why you need to upgrade.
Exactly correct, we wanted to like them more, it just is that they are not that good -- Period.

Aren't you in class studying M.E.? You must be taking a very small load w/ the amount of time you spend on AH forums, heck when I was in College I had no time but to study, work, sports, and G/F's.
My semester's been over for a few days except finals, which i'm studying 12h/day for and it's going to be 3 in 2 days and then 1 more on wednesday. I deserve a break in between all this! I only really "spend time" on the two or three threads I'm already subscribed to, anyways.

Maybe i should spend less time online... but I'd go insane. I haven't done gaming, sports, work or listening to music in like 2 weeks now. You gonna take my internet away too!?!?!

LOL I said it is OK to not like a highly regarded speaker brand but that is no excuse to go slumming it!
Why are you slumming it, Bose that is? I never have slummed out any Major Brand, like KEF/Klipsch/BOSE... how could anyone slum out a name brand like Bose, since 1968 they have been making the 901's. If they were no good, they LONG Ago would have been out of production if they weren't any good. Now, on Series VI for the 901's. Might just want to try a pair of those and the NHT Four Towers!!

I am not a Bose Fan by any means. I have owned a 3 pairs over the years. First the Series II in 75 and 2 pairs of Series V in 84. Driven with a good amp (300 Watts or better) they don't sound too bad compared to some of the stuff that's beeing pushed now in the $1300.oo price range. Would I by them now, NO did I enjoy them at the time YES. They where one step going up on the speaker ladder, we all don't start with the best speakers on the market.

Not Bose.

Try NHT Classic Three. Easier to return. If you love them, you will love the Four.
I like the idea of a side firing woofer. My rear towers have them and they do sound good. My tweeter fires up and the mids one forward and one inward. Gives a nice rear soundstage. I was even thinking of using them for my mains.

lol I was just kidding. Although unless you are getting a used pair for a steal, there are certainly better speakers for less money that can be had nowadays, unless, of course, you prefer the Bose sound.

Also, if I remember correctly, they don't currently make the 901s in the same manner that they used to, I seem to remember an explanation that now they take a lot of short cuts on quality. I could be mistaken, but you might want to look that up before you take the plunge on a pair.

Here is your 901 - this is interesting
Bose 901 loudspeaker | Stereophile.com

I will say from my listening impressions in the 90's - that the 901 is loud,
and lacks good resolution - and forget about a good central image.

Not to sound smart, but what where you running in 1975. My little rig, Marantz 4400 (cost 1250.--) Dual 701 TT (cost $400.--) Bose 901 Series II (Don't remember what they cost me) Don't be knocking them speakers, a lot of us still have some good memories of those days. Fulton Premiers where build by ear and they'll blow just about all the speakers away that have been mentioned so far on this post.

1984 4 bose 901's powered by VSP Lab Gold Edition Poweramps (MOSFET) and a couple of SAE Amps. VSP Straightwire Pre-amp, DBX Dynamic Range Expander and a few other goodies. I know picture quality is poor. Man did I enjoy that system.

I am not trying to take your joy and memories away - for one to enjoy
their system and be happy, is a good thing. We may not agree on every
thing. Life is short - have fun.

I don't care about specs. Mercedes and BMW might have better specs, but I enjoy my Lexus. As long as it sounds goods to me, that's all that matters. People knock Polks, I had Polks that sounded real good, again better than all speakers mentioned on this post. Nobody has to agree it's just the way I feel. I think what you're missing is that companies like Kef, Mourtaund Short, Snell, Warfredale don't even exitst. These are just names used for marketing. It's like Akai-Teack-Nakamaichi Plasma TV's. I don't see no flat piston drivers in Kef's, that's what put them on the map. These are just a few names to fool the masses. Nothing for nothing, these old Polk's are killers. I don't even remember the model, you have to ask sawzalot.

I did own some Boston Speakers which I also enoyed very much. They where flat panels in the early 80's. One night I was felling good and decided to take them apart. They where made out of Styrofoam with 2 wires going to a little thing in the middle, but boy did they sound good, I was amazed.

Anyone with a Pink Floyd Poster on the Wall knows their stuff... way to go Walter. Just got there remastered dual CD set here, and it is excellent. :)

As you know, I had 3 BMW's and they all fell apart at the seems, sold them all... I should of bought that LEXUS, hahaha... right on.

We used to have Harman Kardon, Akai, SAE Amps, and SAE Racks with Altec Lansing and some custom speakers by Tom Gates from Canada as well and some really fine DWD speakers out of Fresno, CA. that we all rocked out w/ in the 70's - they were awesome also. We still have our Sansui TA-500 and it still is playing like brand new, now of course DENON and the KLIPSCH's we ALL LOVE that can ROCK OUT, but need a NEW ROCK OUT Upgrade, if that is even possible -- I wonder, not Aperion VGT's, maybe NHT Fours or maybe KEF Q900 or R900's, or maybe in the end run just go up the Klipsch lineup to the big bad boys RF-7II's (at $2.2K per Pair) -- the later will certainly Kick IT UP and UP AGAIN - some formula PWK had in his pocket when he died a few yrs. ago!

What other speaker has dual 10" drivers, w/ the 1 3/4" titanium tweeter/horn weighs in at 87 Pounds w/ 101dB Sensitivity and will handle 250W RMS or 1000W Peak, and will shake the walls w/ sound for $2200 per Pair delivered to your door?

I am all ears, sorry I went over the $2K thread limit, but only by $200.

Hey, do you have a link, as I cant find RF-7 II's for 2200/pair delivered? Lowest I found was 2400 and they were B-grade on e-bay.

So right now I am setting up the Outlaw sub, it is HUGE (and ugly looking like those you see in night-clubs), but I am hoping it makes up for the looks by some NICE clean 'n crisp thumps. I notice it doesn't have XLR inputs, shouldn't a $650 sub have XLRs?

I am a bit puzzled on the Outlaw sub, I think it is not meant for music play since it doesn't play crisp. It works fine with movies though I haven't used it much for movie yet. One problem I have is, that when I do use it for music, and then turn the volume down, the sub gives a buzzing sound that is fairly loud. At that point I just turn it off. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do differently.

That sounds like a defective unit. No subwoofer should "buzz" unless it's a ground loop.

Besides that, you probably just have to work out the equalization and placement to your room. If the frequency response ain't flat you'll hear too much bass bloom from the room. I do recommend running your mains as "large" and your bass management to "both" so that you've got three distinct sources of bass loading the room for music.

I also suspect your subwoofer trim level is set too high. The subwoofer really should not contribute enough to the response to be noticed. It should just dissappear while solidifying the deepest notes.

Ultimately there's many factors at play and without the ability to measure it's tough to say.

I also want to point out that large vented subs in smaller rooms can also have an unbalanced response because of pressure vessel gain. The solution is again equalization. Bass ain't plug n play.
