New Receiver Kills Blu-Ray

(I am definitely in the "Beginners" category, so please keep it kindergarten simple!) My setup: Sony KDF-E50A10 TV (7-yrs old), DirectTV PVR HR-20-100, Sony Blu-Ray BDP-S350 (1-yr old), brand new Denon AV receiver AVR-1912 (replacing a very old Onkyo that had only optical connectors). Three new Mediabridge Ultra Series High-Speed HDMI cables. I paid for help setting up the new receiver. Nice guy, but he is stumped, too. PVR: HDMI cable to receiver (SAT/CBL), Blu-ray: HDMI cable to receiver (BD), receiver: (Monitor) HDMI cable to TV. Both the PVR and the Blu-ray are using TV's Video 6 input.
Satellite works fine. Blu-ray is dead in the water. Black screen and no audio. Any ideas anybody?

When you say dead in the water, does it not even power on?

If it does, can you tell if your avr is getting a signal from it? Have you tried switching the hdmi cable from the pvr to the blu ray to test the cable? Try running the blue ray direct to the tv as well to eliminate the avr.

Is your avr handling the signal differently for blu ray vs. pvr? Check to see what the avr is setup to do with the signal. Try a different hdmi input in case the one you're using is bad.

What is your blu ray configured to output? If your TV can't handle it then your blu ray shouldn't be outputting 1080p or a 3d signal.

Try a factory reset of the the blu ray. I had my panny go nutty on me, but I got garbled screens. I have a feeling it may have been outputting a 1080p signal which my TV couldn't handle, or perhaps a 3d signal. A factory reset fixed the issue.

I don't understand? You said both are going to the receiver, but both are using input 6? Do you mean input 6 is what is being fed from the receiver? I agree, the first thing to try is hooking the BD directly to the TV to make sure it works, then different inputs on the receiver if it does. I would see what the output of the BD player is set to, as mentioned, as it may not be outputting a signal the receiver can handle. If you aren't trying to watch a 3D disc, you probably aren't outputting 3D, so I doubt that is the issue.

The blu-ray has power. The display on the front is active. If a disk is inserted, the counter progresses. No picture, no sound, so I can't go into the menu to do a reset. I have tried hooking it up to the TV directly; no change. I hooked it up to another TV, and it works just fine. I haved tried different inputs on the receiver; no change. "Input 6" is what the TV is set at. I'm not sure how that works. When playing the PVR or the blu-ray, the TV uses "input 6" (actually, I guess the receiver uses it, since only one HDMI cable comes from the receiver to the TV). I'm getting confused. I'm beginning to think the TV has been fried. The past 7 years, the single HDMI cable on the TV was used for the Blu-Ray (worked just fine). The PVR went to the TV via component. All sound went to the Onkyo via optical cables. This new receiver now has meant the TV's single HDMI is handling all video and sound. Maybe it's busted??

If it works on another TV, it obviously isn't the player, so perhaps you should try a different input on the TV? Does it have more than one HDMI input?

It's an old TV and has only one HDMI input. When I was talking about "input 6", I guess it's not a physical thing. I did try changing it to input 5. but it didn't matter. It seems ridiculous to have to buy a new TV because the blu-ray won't work! But, I guess that's the only thing left to do.

If you hooked the blu ray up to another TV then see how it's configured. Make sure it's putting out a signal that your tv and avr can accept. Maybe even try a factory reset.

Does your avr show any sign of a signal? When my blu ray needed a reset the avr couldn't lock on a signal and the lights flashed.

I think this might be the answer. When you hook up the player to the other TV, set it to 720p/1080i, or if there is a "resolution" button on the remote, you can try that, which should automatically detect the highest resolution the TV will accept. In addition to that, the receiver may have this as well and if the receiver is upscaling everything to 1080p, you may want to drop it down as well. Many TVs that have only a single HDMI input were only 720p/1080i capable and it will either display fuzz or no picture if a 1080p signal is sent.
