Yamaha RX-A800 question.

Does anyone know what impedance the surrounds (2 wide and 2 rear) can run at? Looking at a couple sets, but they are rated 4ohm. I don't want to kill the amp.

I'm pretty sure the A800 only says it's okay to have 4ohm speakers on front three, and 6-8ohm for the rest. It'd be in the manual somewhere though, and I'm too lazy to download it

I already did , but it didn't definitively say what it can do on the surrounds. It does say it can run 4-ohms on the front speakers (but I assumed that meant front L/R).

Here's my thinking - the noise level on surround and presence speakers isn't that high, so the probability of exceeding a current limit on the amps due to a lower impedance on those speakers is pretty low - and even if it did get exceeded, the protection circuitry should trip and prevent damage. Does that sound right to the rest of you?

I am traveling the moment, and won't be home for a couple weeks, so I cant see the manual that came with it. I searched a little online but didn't find the info. I did look a the CD that comes with a 671 and it was only stable to 6 Ohm on the L/R after switching in the menus, but its not an Aventage series.

It's for the wifeys living room, so it won't be used to set any SPL records. Loud enough to be heard over a vacuum cleaner at most.

I had a chance to look at the manual yesterday and the recommended speaker impedances are NOT listed in there. It said in the manual to refer to the back panel so I looked at one online. It would appear (unless I have interpreted in correctly) that you can use either 8 or 6/4 ohm speakers as long as the speaker impedance menu is set to one or the other. If you do have a mix of 4/6 ohm and 8 ohm speakers, I think Yamaha recommends switching to 4/6 ohms. That being said, they are surround use and don't used much unless maybe in multi-channel music applications like DVD-A or SACD. For movie soundtracks, their use is not very taxing to the receiver so you may get away with using them.

Here's what the manual has to say on page 18:

"This unit is configured for 8 ohm speakers at the factory setting. When connecting to 6 ohm speakers, cary out the following procedure to swith to 6 ohm. When the unit is configured for 6 ohm speakers, 4 ohm speakers can also be used as the front speakers."

I'd take that to indicate that it's not recommended to use 4 ohm speakers for surrounds.

Thanks all. I'll look at some more 6-8 ohms then. I don't want to trash the receiver.
