I guess I'm gonna buy mysely some good kitchen knives, and I remember this thread from about 6 months ago that morphed into kitchen knives: http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/steam-vent/74770-any-knife-nuts-here.html

So I was wondering if any of the kitchen knife aficionados here had ran accross any smoking deals on quality sets this Black Friday weekend?
My parents have a set of cutco knives that are older than me. They are still sharp enough to do surgery with. They gave us a set for Christmas and I absolutely love them. They are made with surgical steel and are extremely sharp. I'm not sure how you go about buying them, but they are worth every penny.

100% agreed with Cutco Cutlery. Vector Marketing used to come to out hotel and I got mine and then some for free. Best steel that I know of and I've been a chef for too many years. They'll never get dull no matter how much you use them. Stay away from Henkell, Wustorf and some other german companies because they're nothing but overpriced junk. Then again a good little starter set from cutco will set you back about 1k, yes $1000.-- and then some, but they will last forever. They are strickly for home use, it's not something you would use in a professional kitchen. We use mostly Ken Onion Cutlery. Amazon.com: Ken Onion by Shun DM0500 8-Inch Chef's Knife: Kitchen & Dining

Thanks for the replys.

The Cutco sound nice, but a grand for a starter set is more than I want to spend. Was kinda thinking about spending 2 to 3 hundred. Oh well.

In about 1h45m amazon will have a "A 5-piece kitchen knife set from Wusthof at a sharp price" for a lightning deal. No clue on what kind of knives they'll be or the actual pricing though, nor do I have any experience with the brand. I have a $20 set of ginsu knives :D

sorry to say this, but I have some experience with Cutco knives and their customer service,

their CS totally sucks ! to get service or replacement on ANY of their knives is like a root canal with no Novocain, and they make you pay for shipping to them AND return shipping which ends up costing more than the knife !

stick with Kershaw or some other brand,

there are many other knife sets that are better quality AND better CS anyway

I have a set of chicago cutlery fusions that I bought a few months ago. They've held up great, and I couldn't be happier with them. They may not be the fanciest, but they hold an edge and look great doing it.

Ours were gifts(I'd never spend that much on the kitchen). I've heard their CS has gotten better.

According to their website return shipping is 6(1-3 items) or 9(4+ items) bucks depending on how many. Sounds like a single knife isn't very economical, but a bunch of them would be.

I've been really impressed with my Calphalon Katana knives so far, I don't have the set, I just bought whatever knives I needed as I went along, but if I had it to do over I would have saved up and bought the while block set.

I had a Henckel cleaver and the handle broke. I sent it back to them and got another cleaver no questions asked. I think as long as you stick with the Henckel models that have the 2 guys on the blade and stay away from the single dude ones you're good. At least that's what I've heard.

But I haven't used that cleaver since I got my Calphalon Katana cleaver. We have a set of knives that we got from Royal Prestige when the wife and I got married. I NEVER use those things anymore. I've got my 7" Katana cleaver, my 7" Santoku and my 5" Santoku and between those 3 knives I get all of my cutting needs met.
