HI folks. I'm getting ready to finish a portion of my basement as a theater room. Can someone point me in the right direction of things I should do to make the room sound great? I have no idea what to do as far as sound treatment and such. Thanks!

Russ Herschelmann's "home theater architect" columns covered a lot of basics in SGHT and/or Ultimate AV. Unfortunately they don't seem to be preserved online at hometheater.com. Still, there's this article: Design the Ultimate Home Theater- On a Budget | Home Theater and probably other tidbits to be found there.

Some things to watch for: light fixtures and heat/vent stuff that doesn't rattle or buzz. Use an exterior grade door with weatherstripping. Check the room dimensions with software that calculates resonances. Consider running conduits so you can easily pull new cables as technology changes. Maybe prewire for bass shakers (tactile transducers) in the seating area. If you want to minimize sound transmission to the rest of the house, suspending a ceiling using Z-channel may help. Likewise, walls with interleaved studs so vibrations aren't conducted into the house frame. Check out : SOUNDPROOFING & More Soundproofing! Super Soundproofing Co.

There's pages of impressive DIY home theatres at AV Interiors DIY | Home Theater for inspiration.
