Upgrade from my OPPO 83???

Just curious if moving up the OPPO chain to the new 95 model would be worth the coin. This would be mainly used for playback of BD & DVD's via 7.1 analog. I'm not too concerned with it's analog playback. It's because of OPPO's use of the new Sabre DAC's that peaked my interest. I just don't know if the 95's audio on BD & DVD's would be that much more noticeable compared to the 83 model. Also the 95 has 3D capability just in case I ever get the urge. I'm just thinking out loud here. What do you think?

Not sure I understand your two statements here. You must be concerned with analog playback if you are interested in the Sabre DAC.

It seems unlikely that the 95 would be much benefit over the 93 if it is only for movies.

Sorry about the confusion. What I mean is that I'm not really interested in the 95's ability for 2 channel CD playback. I use the 7.1 analog strictly for BD/DVD audio playback from the OPPO 83 into my NAD T765 AVR which doesn't have HDMI inputs. The Sabre DAC's are incorporated for both applications, the 2 channel playback isn't a major concern. But I'm just wondering if the Sabre DAC's would be a major step up for the BD/DVD audio over the present OPPO 83.

If you just have an 83, then I do believe it will be a worth while upgrade. If you have an 83SE, it won't be.

Yep, just the plain Jane 83 no SE after it's name. Do you really think the Sabre DAC's will make that much of an audio difference for BD/DVD sound tracks? Hmmm...I'm still on the fence.

I went from the 83 to the 83SE, and I can tell the difference. For movies, it is not really as noticeable; it is with music where it is most obvious IMO.

*edit - I just looked at their site and it looks like you can still send yours in to get it updated to an SE.

I saw that to but I think it only upgrades the analog section for 2 channel playback. That's something I'm not looking to do. My curiousity is about the Sabre DAC's in the 95 for BD/DVD playback as compared to the BD/DVD playback DAC's in the 83.

That upgrades the entire unit to 83SE specs; I had them do mine shortly after the SE came out. Bascially they are replacing all the inernals that are different from yours with SE components including the Sabre DACs (older version than what are in the 95, but still excellent).

Like I said before, you will notice it a bit, but movies IMO, are less demanding that music. Just for movies, I would say that is a tough call, but I probably wouldn't do it just for that.

Why are you not interested in 2 channel performance?.. That's a main reason for having the Oppo..

Too bad I don't own a 83 but I can tell you the 95 does not sound better than my old Denon 3910, not even in two channel. Now I do not own real high end (or to me, more accurately speaking, high price:D) electronics and speakers so may be those who do, could hear improvements. I have no regret though, it is probably the best univeral player for under $1,000.

Not really. No more disc spinners for me...thank you very much. After having a SONOS music server feeding into a CA DacMagic (all CD's ripped to FLAC on dBpoweramp) & hearing the results there's no turning back. I just need a player for movies now.

That's what I thought. To spend the extra coin just to get the Sabre dacs for my BD movies isn't such a good idea. Plus I wouldn't use the 95 for 2 channel either. Having the music world at my finger tips with the SONOS controller has spoiled me rotten. To have to get up & load a CD...simply not gonna happen. :)
