I went through this recently and did a ridiculous amount of research.

Anyway, I will echo some of the other comments:

Avoid a pillowtop.
Buy one of the big name brand's premium lines (Posturpedic, Beautyrest, etc).
The pocketed coil thing is not a gimmick. It's awesome.
Get a firmness that is appropriate for the people sleeping on it.
Shop around for a good deal. It can be almost impossible to comparison shop since the model names are different at every shop, but you can look at the specs and tell what's what.

FWIW, I got a king size plush Simmons Beautyrest (pocketed coil happiness) with frame, box spring, delivery, carryout, and mattress protector for about $1200. It was the one a step up from the lowest end Beautyrest and has a layer of latex foam that's pretty sweet.

Where ever you get the mattress, I would ask if they also take away the old mattress. If they do, you may want to consider hauling the new mattress yourself. I can't help thinking this way, but, do you want your new mattress in with old mattress's that may be infested with bedbugs and who knows what else? Yes, I'm the germaphobe guy. I don't put silverware directly on the table at a restaurant, and various other idiosyncrasies. Drives my wife nuts...

Good luck!

We have a pillow top. The mattress is super thick so the pillow top is only on one side and we had to buy one of those low rise box springs so that Cheryl could stop using the milk crate to climb into bed. The mattress itself is firm. Think of it as a marshmallow on a cinder block. For an extra hundred bucks or so we got the equivalent of a mattress condom. I guess it breathes but is spunk and cootie proof to protect the mattress from what's in me and on me. The warranty says that the mattress won't sag more than a specified dimension for 10 years I think providing it has been on a proper box spring.

It's odd that Cheryl who wakes in the same position she fell asleep in did not like the Tempurpedic while I who moves around all night long loved laying on it even though it made rolling around difficult. Anyway, after trying out several mattresses laying down on ours was like taking a break from the last one. F^%&ing bliss is about the only way I can describe how I feel when I lay down on that thing even now after more than 5 years.

I subscribed to Consumer Reports to see what they had to say on the topic before dropping the ching on that. It didn't point me to a mattress so much as it informed me on how to pick one. So far I haven't wished that I had saved on that purchase in order to buy better audio stuff. I wish I could say the same about Cheryl's car and beauty salon visits. I want her to get a bicycle and shave her head.

I bought a new mattress about two months ago... on Amazon!

I got a Sleep Innovations 10" Memory Foam Mattress and I couldn't be happier with it. I will never go back to a standard mattress. It has a 20 year warranty and for $350 it was a killer deal. I sleep better and I don't toss and turn. The Sleep Innovations mattress is more firm than a Tempur-Pedic. I find it just right. I sink in just enough and I don't feel the need to toss and turn. If I fall asleep on my back I wake up that way.

Rick,

We got a Simmons Beautyrest Exceptionale with latex foam in the form of a one sided pillow top. It says something about Marquis Villa on it. I think that's the ticking/cover pattern/material scheme.

Unlike the lady who left a negative review for it, Cheryl and I both feel lucky to have it. It's not any of the ones pictured in the Amazon link on that site. Ours has way more puffy pillow. Contrary to a previous poster's experience I find most women like it hard enough to cut diamonds.

Re: New Mattress

I just bought a Tempurpedic in Mattresses Pittsburgh and it's really good. I already have a memory foam and it's my mom who uses it now that she lives with me here. :)
