New to the forum, looking for tube advice.

Hello all, i have recently come into a large amount of vacuum tubes, and i would like to build myself a small amp, for my computer speakers, just so i can start to understand the circuitry. I have no idea what kind of tubes to use, or really how to start. I know Ive been missing out on quality sound, and i want in.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Advice a) don't do tubes
what computer speakers do you have ?
To learn circuitry and soldering - you'd be better of start with solid amp kit like this one:
Sure AA-AB32992 2x15W Class-D Stereo Power Amp Kit TPA3122 320-322

plus it would more powerful than your typical tube set amp anyhow

IT's not quite that simple.

In all honesty, you're not gonna get what you need from a forum. Stop by your library and see what books (remember those?) there are on these.

A good place to start is to try to get hold of a RCA Receiving Tub Manual. They do provide the basics* and show a few tried and tested circuits.

You would be better off trying your hand at some modern transistor kits to get your feet wet.

Or, if you're really hot for tubes (pun intended), check here for some DIY tube amps.

* But the "basics" can get quite involved. Some electronics classes would help

ah ok let me rephrase. Ive been a technician for ten years, and i have a pretty good grasp on electronic circuits, and yes books are those things with words on dead trees smashed into spine made of some kind of particulate.

Well then, you should be all set. You already know all there is to know. Pick up that RCA Receiving tube manual and you're good to go. Have fun.

i will defiantly take a look around for one, do you know of any schematics available? or perhaps certain tubes that have proven better then others for audio applications?

That manual has quite a few circuits (and their specs) and will get you started. I've got the 1959 version and it has all the theory an experiencd tech should need. As for tubes, get the basic circuit down first and then worry about rolling. Your real problem (and cost) will in finding decent iron.

As for circuits, google can be a wunnerful resource if you get creative with your searches. You should lready know that, no?

Oh, BTW, are you aware that that is a separate forum for DIY, located two forums below the Beginners forum?
