Can your sub suddenly playing a bass heavy scene mess it up?

Maybe that wasn't worded perfectly, but...

I had my PS3 (Blu-ray player) on pause and I unpaused it during an apparently bass heavy movie from a scene. It startled me (it was pretty loud by my standards which is probably nothing for you guys) and I got to wondering if that could damage it. FWIW it performed flawlessly afterwards.

No. The sub doesn't need to warm up or anything like that, and a sudden burst of noise won't hurt it as long as it's below the maximum SPL for the sub.

Yes, a sudden large passage, if it is beyond the capability of the sub, can most definitely damage it. A sustained period of playing at the limit can also damage it. As you already mentioned, if you don't hear anything wrong, it is most likely fine.

Definitely not beyond the capability of the sub, just loud for me, so i guess thats good!
