Friends,

I did a google search, but would rather some ideas from our experts here. Can anyone recommend a good jazz cd (to include jazz fusion and other similar genres) with an emphasis and/or focus on bass (the instrument as opposed to low notes)?

If it matters on recommendation, I'm a fan of Jazz at the Pawnshop and Sonny Rollins.

Thanks!

Mainly upright bass, or electric bass? Anything with Neils Henning Oersted Pederson (a lot of Joe Pass + Oscar Peterson albums), Ray Brown, The Heath Brothers and you can't forget Charlie Mingus- these aren't necessarily focused on bass but the playing is outstanding and they are sometimes highlighted. Other bass players would include Eddie Gomez, Pops Popwell, Chuck Rainey, James Jamerson (best known for all of the Motown tunes he played on), Jaco Pastorius, Alphonso Johnson and many more.

I've been getting into Charlie Haden lately. He has done so many really terrific CDs. My favorite is probably Nocturne because it has some really neat Cuban influences. Jasmine with Keith Jarrett is also excellent.

Ron Carter & Jim Hall, Live at Village West. Live acoustic bass & acoustic guitar Jazz duo.

It's one of my favorite Jazz albums, although I'm looking around right now, and it seems to be out of print. That's just criminal.

Bill Evans Trio, Sunday at the Village Vanguard has some amazing bass work by Scott LaFaro (and features a couple of his excellent compositions as well). Acoustic trio set and possibly my favorite jazz album, period. These songs in particular feature LaFaro a lot, as a sort of tribute as he was killed in a car accident 10 days after the live recording session (the other tracks, less bass centered, went on a second album, "Waltz for Debby").

Thanks for the suggestions! I was mainly interested in upright bass but will check into all the works listed to see which one (or ones!) I'd like to purchase.

I stumbled across this recently. Very lively performance and endless bass. Quite good recording, too.

Superbass 2

On their own, bassists Ray Brown, John Clayton, and Christian McBride are three of the most talented musicians in jazz today. But, performing together as Superbass, the trio becomes a sublime ensemble, capable of inventive, virtuosic playing with no accompaniment needed or wanted from horns or percussion. Recorded live at the Blue Note club in New York over the course of a couple of sets in December 2000, this disc joyously defies logic--who knew that the upright bass was capable of singing solos from Porgy and Bess?--and standard musical conventions. Together, these guys produce a tender take "My Funny Valentine," an upbeat version of "Get Happy," and a funky Latin jazz number ("Taco with a Pork Chop") that would do Willie Bobo proud. All the while, the threesome is having a great time and taking plenty of solo turns. They've done this routine before--on the first live Superbass disc--but this one takes the cake; the playing is incredible. A fun disc. --Jason Verlinde

Kai Eckhardt is one of my current favorite electric bass players. He performs with Garaj Mahal and has some good solo stuff. Fusiony jazzy jammy, a modern Jaco.

I thought it was so cool that I was reading this thread right at the same moment she was in the player. Crazy crap has been happening like that a lot lately. Like I'll be reading an article at work, something I do quite a bit, and just as I'm reading a word someone will say the exact same word in one of the other offices will say that exact same word just as Im reading it. OK, now back to your regularly scheduled thread.

DJReef,

To go off topic for just a bit... how is the integration between those subs & Dynaudios?

Real good. They're in a small room, so that helps a lot. I'm able to run the full range signal through the subs and use the onboard crossovers to divide the signal.

Definitely check out the already mentioned Esperanza Spalding and Jaco Pastorius.
Also, Charnett Moffet is very, very good.

lol you are too funny djreef . Here is one I got in the mail today. Listening to it now sounds great so far. It was recommended to me and upright bass too: Amazon.com: Walking With My Bass: Nilson Matta: Music

Is this a good version to buy? This one says 26 tracks could it be right? Amazon.com: Jazz at the Pawnshop: Domnerus, Hallberg, Erstrand, Ri: Music
Been a bit busy lately with re-formatting my music collection to .flac after I noticed some anomalies during WMA lossless playback over Media-Monkey (nothing with the music, just a weird digital noise on some tracks). Sounded like a compatibility problem but was only noted on one or two songs. Took a little while but not a huge deal since I use DBPoweramp.

Back to topic, you all have given me some motivation to get off my duff' and get on Amazon. I originally ordered the Bellingham sessions from this thread which I do enjoy and need to spend some more time with. I also just ordered these:

Super Bass 2 - Ray Brown; Audio CD
Walking With My Bass - Nilson Matta; Audio CD
From Left to Right - Bill Evans

Almost forgot, I downloaded this guy a week ago:

Audiophile Jazz Prologue III (DSMV 24/96) | Hifitrack.com
Audiophile Jazz Prologue III (DSMV 24/96), Kent Poon (Executive Producer).

"Freddie" (#4) is one of my favorites and the recording is excellent! More and more I’m beginning to notice products that are produced with sound quality in mind!

Now, if I can just save up for a 2.2 music only system like DJReef!
