BluRay/DVD players and firmware upgrades

Maybe this can be put into a poll....*shrugs*

How many of you were forced to do a firmware upgrade on your players because they didn't play one of the later DVDs/BluRays. I've had a cheapy Sony BluRay and Samsung BluRay and DVD plaeyers respectively and none of them required a firmware upgrade. They just played everything I threw at it. I'm lucky so far I guess talking with some of my colleagues at work who were forcved to firmware upgrade. I guess the categories of the poll would be

1.) no firmware upgrade..everything plays fine
2.) firmware upgrade to play the main title
3.) firmware upgrade to acess features other than the main title.

It depends on what you are watching usually. The more movies you watch, the more likely it is to happen.

The studios may change their codecs slightly, requiring you to update the player to correctly decode it. I've run into this with Oppo a few times, but they've always released an update to correct it. On my PS3, I have run into a number of discs that had issues, but they also regularly release updates to fix this. The PS3 more or less forces you to update to access online features, but I tend to go ahead and update it. I've updated the firmware on my Panasonics, even though I never ran into discs that wouldn't play.

I updated mine (4 in use) but I never had to do one because it would not play a disc. The only slight exception is that the PS3 failed to play a concert BR disc while the other 3 had no trouble with. I have since updated the PS3 at least two or three times, still it wouldn't play that disc.

Well, the new BD Star Wars set is causing a bunch of issues from what I read at AVS. I actually replaced my nice older Panny 55, slow loads to boot, to a cheap Panny, really fast load:D so I can fix the issues. A family room Sharp BD needed a firmware to even play one of those discs.
In the past with DVDs only, I don't remember any issues, I never had one.

The PS3 is the only one that forces me to update the firmware, both my Sammy and Sony BDP's only suggest it. Never had issues with playback....yet.

My Sont BDP-S5000ES has never failed to play a BluRay because of firmware...knock on wood.

I have had several occations where an update was required. I think the most notable movie requiring an update was Avatar.

I work at a local AV store / service center and we got more calls about not being able to play Avatar than any other movie. Which was resolved with a firmware update.

Personally since I bought my 1st BD player in Jan of 07' I have only had 2 times where an update was necessary. Now what I find interesting is that my RX-A3000 has had 3 firmware updates in the past 9 months.
