Yamaha receiver RX-V661 problems

I have been having problems with my Yamaha receiver RX-V661 for a few weeks now. It started with it shutting off while playing a DVD. No other components changed and I was able to turn it back on. Then anywhere from 2 seconds to 5 minutes it would do it again. A week or so later the same problem was happening while watching tv off directtv. Today, it is on but no sound is pushing out to my speakers while watching tv. I checked all the cables and switched them around to see if it was them which it wasn't. The receiver is about 3-4 years old.

Thoughts? Do I need a new receiver?

Thanks!

First check all speaker wiring for any shorts or whiskers. If none found, can you here the speaker set up test tones?

If there are no whiskers and you can't hear the test tones, it is new receiver time.

Still not working. I took everything apart and redid it with the same problem. I also tired:

- changing outlets completely
- new power strip
- adding one speaker at a time to the receiver
- removing a few components from the power strip (This problem happened before I bought apple TV but that’s what seems to kill the sound currently)
- sounds also cuts out when I plug in anything into the outlet below the one the power strip is on.

I don’t get it because the receiver still works! A friend suggested it might have something to do with the internal power supply inside the receiver.

New thoughts?

With nothing connected to the receiver - that includes all cables turn it on and leave it. See what happens. If there is a problem in the receiver itself it'll shut off on its own. If it stays on try connecting one speaker at a time - then one interconnect at a time - with the power off before connecting anything of course. When you connect something that does not cause the receiver to shut off disconnect that component before running the next test. Turn it on after each connection has been restored. This is time consuming but may show you a component that has some type of fault that causes the receiver to shut off. Of course if the receiver shuts off with nothing connected that will tell you what you need to do.

I tried that over the weekend and no luck there either. The receiver hasn't been shutting off lately. It has more recently cutting sound out intermittently. The only thing new that has been added in the past 2 years in my apple tv. However. This problem started randomly prior to that purchase.

Do a receiver reset before your throw it out. It just might be a software problem in the preamp/amp interface.

Likely however there is a problem in the power supply to the power amps, most likely a failed voltage regulator.
