Purchased the TX-NR708, what to expect.

I was tired of waiting the for RX-A1000 to go on clearance again, so I got the refurb'd Onkyo for $330 shipped. The 708 has enough HDMI ports, 1.4 so it handles my 3D, and decodes all the HD audio I need. I currently only run JBL book shelves for mains and surrounds (sig) and the matching center.

I have read I need to make sure the firmware is updated right out of the box. Anything else I should be aware of? I have also heard the Onkyo's run a little warm with MAY be a problem for me based on my stand. I will do my best to monitor temps.

I have a year older 707 in my bedroom and love it. Plenty of power and it sounds great. It does run warm and because mine is in an enclosed cabinet with doors I installed a 120mm 9db PC case fan above and behind it to draw heat out. The fan is connected to a fan controller that turns the fan on at 85 and turns it off at 80 degrees. The fan and controller were like $35 but only needed in an enclosed space.

Thank you. My Denon 887 was more than enough power, but the audio decoding, shortage of HDMI inputs, and no 1.4 for 3D was hurting me. Now with the Onkyo, I am set until I move from my townhome to a house and need bigger speakers and MOAR POWAAAAA!

Onkyo 7xx series has audio pre-outs, so then you would need
MOAR POWAAAAA!
just add external amp(s)

like sholling's I have even only 805 avr - it does get hot, but mine is not in enclosed cabinet, but fully open to room air - and I like then it's cool :D so does my avr

Putting onkyo avr in enclosed cabinet without extra ventilation = asking for trouble and shorter lifespan.

I knew it had pre-outs, so all the more reason for me to get it! Mine will be sitting on a glass shelf with a *little* head room between another glass shelf. May have to invest in a small fan.
