DIY Network HD feed looks horrible

Has anyone else noticed that the DIY Network HD feed looks horrible? I'm curious if this is a Dish Network problem or if it is more widespread.

The main issue is contrast. The black level is way out of whack. If I turn the brightness down to zero on my TV it looks somewhat normal. It is only this one channel. I cannot imagine that I'm the only one noticing this.

While it's not the best of the HD signals here, I wouldn't call it horrible.
My description, in comparison to the other channels such as ESPN, would be slightly hazy. But I don't see it as a black level issue.

Have you considered Time Warner? :p

j/k :D

The black level is definitely significantly higher than other channels, that's the cause of the haze. I don't understand how or why they would have this problem.

On an slightly related note, why can't local news stations learn to use a low cut filter? On some newscasts my sub will take off with some crazy rumble because the news station apparently doesn't know what a low cut filter is.

I'm just not seeing the haziness on DIY as any worse than others such as the Food network.

Hopefully some one with cable or Direct will chime in.

BTW, why are you watching DIY when football is on?;)

I couldn't care less about sports. I wish I could pay less money and not have any sports channels. ;)

Is your subwoofer set too high?

Generally when I hear those sorts of comments it's the subwoofer levels too high. Low passing vocals is common, but generally microphones are pretty flat so if your subwoofer is set too high and they don't high pass it'll excite it. The studios monitor at flat levels, generally home theater enthusiasts have their subwoofers set too high. :)

(Not advocating lack of bass, just level out your sub and crank the volume louder for more bass, if your mains can't handle it you need bigger mains. ;) )

My sub is actually calibrated properly with an SPL meter. There is only one offending local station. Their video is also considerably less sharp than the others.
