Anybody doing this?
I'm fed up with my Dish bill and I'm considering jumping.

From my research:

Pros:
Cheaper. (for a while:rolleyes:)
All rooms with an alias box can view recorded shows. (Up to 4 at a time)
Better support (from my experience anyway)

Cons:
Quite possibly poorer picture quality.
No NFL network, HDNet, and a few not worth mentioning.
Lack of external HD support. (My VIP722 supports a 1TB usb HD)

Bueller?

The Whole House DVR has a larger hard drive but they never support external HD or anything that we would consider useful, like the IR port that's on the back but is completely useless.

I didn't have Time Warner's whole house DVR, but I did switch from Time Warner to DirecTV this summer. We had Time Warner for 2 years and then when they jacked the price way up, it was kinda the last brick that broke the camels back.

Here are my gripes about Time Warner:
  • Poor HD picture quality. Yeah, they say HD and lists at 1080, but the compression they use just doesn't deliver the quality I get from DirectTV.
  • On-Demand that really isn't on demand because the system is down half the time. Try explaining that to a 3-year old that wants to watch Sesame Street.
  • My non-DVR HD box crashed about twice a week on average usually when I was trying to calm the kids by trying to fire up an on-demand kids video or attempting to change the channel. It's like a 10 minute reboot. Really sucks during a big game or a movie.
  • Constant, non-stop offers to bundle TV/Internet/Phone. Felt like I was shredding the equivalent of a major metro area phone book each year in upgrade offers.
  • I originally liked the fact that Time Warner had no contract life when I signed up. Two years later, they want a contract with 2 years minimum. So that is no longer an advantage over the Satellite guys.

Dish should be coming out with a whole home DVR either this quarter or early 2012.

I live in a Time Warner area. However, the PQ of cable varies from location to location. I will say that DirectTV is sharper than Dish in terms of HD PQ. And U-verse HD PQ is down right awful.

Ironically, SD PQ in my area ranks the exact opposite with U-verse being the best and DirectTV being the worst.

How up to date is your equipment? If it's old or needs tweaking, that may be the cause. Do you have unterminated jacks on your walls? They should have termination caps, to minimize signal reflections in the cable.

My Time Warner HD is pretty spot on, the issues I have is the sorry equipment they have. I went through 5 DVR's ( Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD) until they finally got one that stayed up and didn't have HDMI issues.

Thanks for the responses.
But does any one have experience with the actual HHDVR service?
Just looking for insight.

Dish also has Blockbuster now...
Thanks. I'll look into that.

I have not used Time Warner as they are not in my area but if their equipment is anything like any other cable equipment I deal with on a daily basis at work I would stick with Dish for sure. I have yet to see a cable box that is not slow, buggy, unreliable, and downright awful. I would take my rock solid Dish DVR any day.

Time Warner must be offering some great deal because in my area I would pay almost $50 more per month for a horrible DVR and 1/3rd the HD channels.
