Good question - I'd probably assume that they are trying to find the power in an amp to properly drive it and also have it match the other series bash amp amenities...

I wonder if the problems with rare-earth magnet supplies have anything to do with that. The SB16 is bound to use a enormous magnet and prices for neodymium magnets have been skyrocketing in the last year, thanks to Chinese hoarding. If this is the case it may be a long while before SVS releases anything using that massive of a driver, especially since they have come under new ownership recently.

Well, either the driver is still in development, or that development has slowed due to them being bought.

Exactly. I have a fully functional SB16U - with a legit 1300W amp - sitting 20 feet from me.

Neo prices have gone up 1400% since we designed that motor. Even when neo prices were quasi-rational, that motor alone costs far more to produce than most complete high-end woofers from other brands. Now with neo through the roof and into the next solar system, there is no way that motor is economically feasible. It's too bad, but we can't control neo prices - so don't hold your breath on the SB16U - it's not on the production docket.

This is a good example of what a world-class radial neo woofer is costing these days on a retail level....

I think a big part of the problem is the total waste of resources and time with wind farms and electric cars. It has been apparent to me for sometime, that those projects will not scale and quickly deplete vital resources.

We need to capture a comet and bring it to Earth, and I'm dead serious.

The space program cut back will be something we will long regret.

How does it sound? ;)

Interesting, but I would like to know how they plan to increase the efficiency of the old induction motor.

A motor with a rare earth permanent magnet is 90% efficient. An induction motor only 40% efficient.

I hate to derail this thread, but this is nonsense. While I very much agree that space program cutbacks are regrettable, as far as is known, comets don't have anything so valuable in them that would warrant the huge and risky effort to steer them back to Earth. Until a far more efficient vehicle is developed that can break Earth's gravity than rocket boosters, space will not be a place for industry, and especially not mining. If you are after more rare earth metals, the next great mining frontier will be the ocean floor, not space.

I say we find ourselves the world's best deep-well drillers, light off some twin titanium shuttles, violate the laws of physics, throw in a love story, and go get us some magnets for them there subwoofers.

Either that or just get Leelee Sobieski to star in "Deep Impact 2." Comets optional.
