"Congratulations you won"

A little voice from nowhere said "Congratulations you won" and IE8 (Internet Explorer 8) closed down.

I thought I somehow clicked on the little red "X" in the top right so I tried to re-open IE8.

I noticed my left mouse button didn't work and I was forced to do a hard reboot. :(

I did, all seemed well and I went back ito IE8. :D

Go back to the beginning of this post, and repeat until you realize you've picked up a fargin' virus.

Sorry to hear that Mark. What anti virus software do you use? Also I ran away from IE back at version 6 for this reason alone. I am a Chrome user now unless I'm using a work system that requires I use IE.

AVG Free, AdAware, and Malwarebytes for the occasional scan.

I've been using these for years but this snuck right past 'em.

At home I use firefox + noscript addon and my AV is MSE. I also run malwarebytes & spybot scans occasionally.

At work I again use firefox + noscript (yay for admin access on my machine) but unfortunately we use some lame mcafee av. I again run scans with mbam every once in awhile.

I've not had a virus or any kind of malware infections in years :D

I've had good luck with those as well.

Were you surfing one of Alex's suggested sites?:D

My best advice to you is this:
Go here: http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/rescuedisk?level=2 download the Rescue disk Iso - burn it to cd (with CdBurnerXP or ImgBurn)
Boot your pc from it, make sure to run update first.
Do full scan of your C: drive

= Have a virus free pc !

I cannot stress how good this solution is. I tried thousands of different methods, but while infected windows is running - there is very little that ANY antivirus could do.

After you done this - Install Firefox 7 or Google Chrome, make one of them default and delete all IE shortcuts forever !!!

My hats off to you - have you every removed fake Antivirus 2000 ? The one which completely disables the system, takes over even task manager

I did remove some fake AV software a couple of months ago but I am not sure what it was. Can't remember the name. It was a mess though mostly bogging the system down.
