jzac - No offense (which means I'm about to offend you) - but don't be an idiot.
3D doesn't cost more for manufacturers to incorporate into projectors. The majority of TVs being sold today I believe are 3D capable.
Not that 3D isn't despised by many, but you have to understand that you can't put 3D up as a scapegoat for a product to make it so you don't like it. That is, the JVC projector is going to cost more because it is a JVC projector. They have ALWAYS cost more than Epson or Optoma 1080p models.
For JVC to compete with others, they have to put out a top shelf product, which means that you get a 120hz or a 240hz projector.
Once you ahve a 120hz or 240hz projector, then you need a processing chip that can handle those speeds.
Once you are buying 100,000 processing chips for $20 a piece, it makes sense to get the ones whcih also handle 3D, because those processing chips costs $20 and ten cents.
Now, you get to include 3D at no additional cost, and you can sell people 3D kits, and 3D glasses, and put 3D on everything.
Yeah, there is marketing there and if you aren't into 3D, then it may not appeal to you, but don't think for a second that 3D is somehow making the projector worse, or taking away from the quality of the product.
This year I setup the JVC RS50 projector for the first time. Not a 3D setup, but a 2D setup.
Out of the box it was simply the absolute best looking image I have ever seen from a projector. Period.
Important to remember that the inclusion of 3D doesn't affect cost, has nothing to do with viewing pleasure, or justification. It has everything to do with profitability over the long term, which includes selling to people who just maybe want 3D at some point in the future, while not taking anything at all away from the quality of your product line, but adding to it overall.
The RS45 has a MSRP of $3,495. I am guessing I will be selling it around $2,999 and that may be a pretty common price on the Internet.
For how popular Pansonic and Epson projectors are, and their 3D coming in around the same price, I would take the JVC pretty much any day of the week over those two brands. Especially considering the very high reliability I tend to associate with JVC projectors.
