I just see folks recommending various subs based on room size and whatnot and a sub like the FV12 seems like it would be overkill for my room. :D
Much of the time when people think a sub will be good, or overkill for their room, it'll likely actually be inadequate, and mostly determined by budget limits, not performance limits.

And all rooms will have some effect on frequencies below the modal region, so you need to EQ accordingly.

Heh, well, I won't know I'm right until I get one picked out and plugged in. I just see folks recommending various subs based on room size and whatnot and a sub like the FV12 seems like it would be overkill for my room. Heck, the sealed units I'm looking at will probably be overkill, but we shall see. :D
I don't think it's possible to have too much sub for a room :D

Just bought the LFM-1 EX for my 1560 cf room. Im kind of worried lol. It does lead into a hallway which leads into other rooms, but it'll be pretty close to me at the far end of the room.

My room is something like 4000cf and one Empire easily fills it - and the rest of the house.

My room is roughly 1330 cf, so I'm fairly certain I don't need much.

Congrats, Kate, on the LFM-1 purchase. I am no closer to a decision on mine than I was yesterday, sadly. Am really attracted to the Emotiva X-Ref 12 based on the Audioholics preview and early user reviews, but would like to see an official full-scale review by someone first. Not sure I can wait, though...

Thanks! Im happy I ended up with this. It is said to be quite musical (accurate), and goes down to 16 hz, perfect for movies.

You never know if youll put it in a bigger room, move, etc. It's always good to have extra headroom. You cant always dial it up, but you can always dial it down, so you always want to go as good/big as you can afford. Thats why people who are into subwoofers say theres no such thing as too much...but there is such thing as too little, and it would suck if you were put in that position!

I'd take a look at the HSUs for musicality. The direct servo woofers at Rythmik are also said to be good. I've heard Emotivas are good as well, though. Best of luck, let me know if I can help!

Yep, good advice, thanks. I think I am going to look at the Rythmik F12 (not the FV12). It seems comparable to the two I'm already looking at and may have even more flexibility in terms of being able to adjust the crossover, bass extension, and PEQ. I like the fact it can go into the mid-teens of FR, which is considerably lower than the Emotiva. Anyone here have an F12?

Dude, whats your budget?! Guess i never really knew since we were just talking about cones. :p The F12 would slaughter the Emotiva. I'd have liked that sub...

I was initially thinking I'd budget a grand for a sub, but most of the ones I've been looking at lately have been in the $500 - 700 range. Rythmik wants $799 for the F12, but maybe it would be worth it...

Im really pretty impressed with the company. Theres a good Owners thread over at AVS where the owner himself posts, he is pretty helpful. They seem like the ideal choice for people wanting the most accurate bass. I cant imagine how good it'd sound being sealed and with the servo technology. Down to 14 hz! Other than that I guess i would go HSU for music.

Yeah, been meaning to join the AVS forum, too, so I better go do that and check out that Owner's thread... :)
