Prog Rock Fans: Check out Spock's Beard

Holly crap man, I ignored these guys too long till my bro brought over some of their CD's. The CD "Snow" for example is a double CD concept album about a young priest's journey. It has some Christian tones just like old Genesis but instrumentally this bad is the shiz. Their drummer (formerly from Tears for Fears) rips and makes the likes of Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree) seem sluggish. Everyone in the band can sing and the instrumentation is on the level of Yes and Genesis at their peak and in some cases beyond!

I will line up an interview with the band after I interview Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree. Perhaps I can get those two talking so Steve can remaster their stuff in 5.1. This music is so appropriate for a high res multi channel audio format.

I recommend an immediate purchase of the album called "Snow".

Porcupine Tree "In Absentia" on CD this is a great album..

I just bought it, too. I like it. Reminds me of Spock's Beard. (a little)

I just introduced Spock's Beard to Rickster71 while visiting him over Labor Day weekend. I played "V" for him...I'm not sure if he dug it or not but we were on the patio BSing so it wasn't a "listening session".

I also have "Feel Euphoria" on CD and need to get more but you (amongst others here) have me on a Porcupine Tree kick at the moment so it will wait.

I have always been kinda amazed at the bands that don't get mainstream recognition. It seems that I find bands through friends that play instruments more often than not. Especially before I found Pandora a few years back.

I find SB's members more talented than PT's but that's not a cut on PT. Both are excellent bands and the overall feel of the music is whats most important.

One of my favorites for those who are unfamiliar.

I believe Gene has mentioned working on interviewing Steve Wilson before...I'd love to see AH do more interviews with people from all facets of the AV/music/movie industries.

I gave the track 'Long Time Suffering' a whirl. Decent groove, good drum hook, Sitar (or midi tracked guitar as sitar).

Opening really reminded me of Steve Vai. The production value is top notch.

As my mentor and buddy said to me 23 years ago: I can appreciate it but it ain't my thing. I don't do Prog-Pop-Rock.

Thanks though. I am going to hit the rest of the tracks and see if it grows on me. I was ambivalent about 'A few small repairs' by Shawn Colvin but now it's one of my favorite albums.

Totally off topic, but I love Shawn Colvin. Her earlier albums are excellent as well, but A few small repairs is my favorite as well.

I've had Spock's beard recommended to me a few times as well, but I never really got into them.

Steve Wilson just sent me his double CD Grace for Drowning. Holly shiz its great. 23 minute instrumental song with incredible drumming, flutes, piano, etc.

It's going to be released on Blu-ray soon!

Yep, I've had it on preorder for at least a month. Couple of weeks and it will be here...

The first solo album, Insurgentes, is absolutely amazing as well, especially the DVD-A!

Hell Yeah! Worlds Apart is an inspired album in my opinion. If ever there was an underrated band they would be it. They were progressive rock before there was such a thing.

I have it too and like it alot. Off all the prog rock bands, Yes is still my favourite.

Boy you know that is one band I never really got into. Maybe it is just because I only heard the songs that were played on the radio which I thought were simple and amateurish. Could be I never even heard their good stuff. What album/CD do you suggest I listen too?
