I saw the trailer about 3 dozen times, so we went tonight. This is an odd movie, with a long list of A- list celebs, but not much high-zoot acting. In fact, the movie plays out as thought it was written by somebody at CDC. Fortunately, so far, it's not a true story, but it seems like it should be. Soderberg directed it rather dryly, and let the situation provide the high drama. The main characters are all very earnest, dedicated and intelligent, but not much like movie characters...no speeches or self aggrandizing gestures.

Early in my career I spent some time working with communicable diseases (got scared out of that trade) and this movie was like a trip back to then. Tracking down possible contacts, predicting the speed of spread and doing the cold statistics (how many people die from the disease vs how many die from the vaccine) is all depicted fairly well for a movie. Don't go for big cinema drama, but do go to get the sh*t scared out of you. Also, I understand that if you take a test after the movie, you get 1 college credit for introductory epidemiology.

Was it better that "outbreak"? It looked pretty star packed and was thinking about seeing it.

So. Is it a worthwhile movie to see? Do we all die in the end?;):D

Yeah, especially if you are a biology major. As I mentioned it's less of a drama than a lesson in the practice of front line epidemiology. What is lacks is Hollywood excess and that's a relief. It's not at all like Outbreak, which was very Hollywood.

Do we all die in the end?;):D
No comment...I've been beat up over spoilers in the past.

I did watch it earlier today. It was decent enough.
It's at IMAX now but I think this will be a better fit for me as a rental for $1.61 as opposed to the cool $50 or so for going out. Thanks for the savings. ;)

It sounds like it might be a thinking man's horror movie. I like movies that are not stupid, so I may end up seeing this one.

A horror movie? I must have missed all the zombies in the trailers;):D
But it sounds good enough to see at the early show for less $$.:D

I think horror is a good word to use for the movie. It's an intelligent horror movie, not one with cheap or corny scares.

Horror movies are usually based on stuff that doesn't happen but that would be scary if they did...zombies, giant squids, vampires, etc. Movies like contagion are not really like that sort of horror because things like that DO and HAVE happened (e.g., the Black Death, Plague of Justinian, etc). It's more like a cautionary tale, except that there's no lesson about something you can do to avoid it. The Yellowstone Volcano, asteroid impact, gamma ray bursters are all things that could wipe us out, and are too scary to be "horror".
