So, I showed up after a day of working on Sunday with my business, and my wife says that the TV seems to be having some issues.

I go upstairs and see the red light on the front of my Pioneer 6070 flashing red, and the TV doesn't turn on. I reach behind it and unplug it, plug it back in, and the red light comes on solid.

So, I turn on the TV, to be greeted with a trashed green bunch of squiggly lines on screen and no real image. The TV stays on for about ten seconds, then shuts itself back off.

I look closely at the front of the TV and find a small impact spider of a cracked screen in the lower corner. Seems my kids had been using the family room as their playroom (again) and one of them decided to throw something at the other and the victim was my 60" Pioneer.

So, now I need to get a new TV, and it's not like there is really an 'upgrade' from that model.

What to do? What to do?

Kill the kids?
Sell the kids to buy a 151HD?
Ground kids until they are 29?
Remove kids bottoms with my palms?
Go out and get a 64" Samsung D7000 plasma?

All of the above?

Not a good end to a long weekend.

oh no! sadness...

you could always get the new Sharp ELITE LCD 70"... but you might need to sell one of the kids to do it-
two birds, one stone! JK-

let us know what you decide to replace it with! I love my Panny VT25...

Spanking and grounding for sure. Plus you should break all of their toys so they know how it feels :(

If you are considering a D7000, have you been looking at the new Sharp ELITE displays? I haven't done much reading on them myself, so I don't know how good they are.

How about try to get repair quote from manufacturer?
Yeah, that's the first call this morning when one of the places opens up. Of course, I need to know they are using Pioneer glass, not some knockoff, which may make things difficult.

Still, if it is $2,000 or more to fix, then it likely just isn't worth it since the 6070 is not a 1080p unit.

I'm not at all under the belief that the Sharp Elite TVs will amount to anything at all. I just installed two of the Sharp 70" LCDs this weekend. They are NOT baseline plasma quality. Nice looking, but not plasma.

Still, I have been thinking of getting the 80" Sharp when it comes out. But, that would leave me with no plasmas in my house, and not one LCD I own comes close to the quality of the Pioneer. :(

When I was younger, my brother and I tore a whole in our screen door to unlock it. My dad was pretty mad about the hole, so we blamed the cat (who we knew he wouldn't do anything to).

My point? Check the wife's story. :D

Seriously, though, unless they'd been told not to play in there, you can't really blame them. Well, okay, you can...but maybe you shouldn't. :) Stuff happens.

I've been really happy with my Panasonic plasma that I bought in 2009, and from what I've read, they've just gotten better. The black level changes over time annoy me on principal, but I bet I'd never have noticed it (and am not sure if I actually have) if I hadn't read about it. Maybe give those a look.

Lets hope this quote will be under $1000 or it'll really be not worth fixing it.

BMX, suggesting to you which model of TV or projector to go with is like advising me regarding computer stuff :) I shall do no such thing, but I see no reason why you shouldn't get one of best tv units, but this time with better warranty ;)

Well, I'm also going to call my insurance company and check on my homeowners policy on this. Probably not giong to amount to anything, but worth the call anyway.

I'm thinking of the 64" Samsung 7000/8000 series or the Panasonic 65" ST or VT series.

Guess I will go window shopping at Best Buy/HH Gregg to see what they have that I can get a good look at.

I have a 58" Samsung C550 and like the picture but could do without the intermittent buzz. You only hear it when the volume is very very low but it is disappointing that it is there. My Panny S1 doesn't do it picture not as nice as my Samsung. I'm sure you already know all about it...I'm just not sure if the Samsungs still buzz or not. Very nice TV's though. I would like to replace the CRT in the living room and am starting to keep my eyes and ears open...looking forward to seeing what you end up with.:)

Good luck, and scare the Hell out of the kids just for good measure!:D

If you really want to scare the kids you're gonna have to beat up the mom.

I called the service center and the bottom line is that there is no Pioneer glass, so there is no hope of repairing it. My insurance company seems to be a no-go for any help either, no shock.

I went to BB & HH, with HH having a much better selection at the larger sizes for comparison. The bad part was that it didn't really help at all. I guess I just want something which looks as good as the D7000 or better and has solid 3D I guess. Yeah, I like 3D, so do my kids, so even though they are grounded for life, I still do love them and want them to enjoy whatever we end up with.

Another possibility is the Sharp 70" 3D model (70LE735 I think) which would be feasible. But, I don't think image quality holds up against the Samsung/Panny.

I still have the pioneer pdp 5060. It's only 1080i but a real great pic. However, my wife says I can't upgrade till it dies. Unfortunately, it's to well made and is still going strong. I'm thinking about greasing up my daughter's wii remote pretty soon.....during tax season of course.:D

I'm in a similar boat. I want to upgrade but the edict from the wife is no upgrade unless I lose 45 lbs or the TV dies. Damn TV keeps surviving the kids including the umbrella my oldest threw into it. I like the grease idea...

But that sucks to lose a TV you really like and WANT to keep. Doh! That does hurt.

Well, I just picked up a Samsung PN64D7000. I'm not sure if I will really get time to set it up tonite or not, but by the end of this weekend I should have a pretty good idea how it looks. I'll either be very satisfied, or really really really upset.

Why oh why have you forsaken us Pioneer?

Can you imagine a new 60" (or larger???) 3D Pioneer with full and proper 1080p capability to remind others where exactly the bar is set at?

I would make some form of stiff backed cover that will hang over the front fascia of the TV. Line it with felt on the screen facing side.

Before you get a new TV or have that one repaired (which I doubt will be cost-effective, but it is worth making enquiries about), put a lock on the door(s) to your home cinema room, and do not let the children in there without adult supervision. Otherwise, you might be facing the same thing again at some point in the future. Remember, a lock is far cheaper than a new TV.

I am so glad I don't have children.

Edited to add:

I see that cpp beat me to the advice for the lock.

Unfortunately, this TV is in the family room. The theater doubles as a rec room where the kids DO have toys, but it has a 52" LCD which I don't really care a ton about and a front projection setup which has a fully retractable 106" tab-tensioned screen and a projector jammed pretty tight to a corner.

So, no lock... but no more toys in there. They haven't watched TV for the last week, which is pretty amazing for my kids to handle. No TV, no video games, no electronic fun.

The Samsung is setup on the floor of the family room as I am going to need help from a friend or two so I can get it off the wall and into my Jeep for disposal. Right now it's a pretty darn heavy paperweight on my wall.

I'm not sure about the Samsung yet. I think it has some pretty good potential, but I will need to spend some time tweaking it. Get a calibration disc for HD for sure and spend an hour or two just going through colors and contrast settings. I definitely did that for the Pioneer when I got it.

Either way, the Samsung is out of the box and is mine now. The 3D that I saw was enjoyable enough. No cross talk at all. Less than I typically see in a theater for sure.
