The speakers were fine and looked brand new. The foam packaging is what looked weird to him. It's possible that's how they package their speakers normally.
Also, if he didn't buy directly from the manufacturer, why are you guys suggesting he contact them? Why not contact the store he bought from? What would the manufacturer have to do with a store selling somebody an open box item marked as new?
All 3 of my ATI amps looked and smelled brand new. They were wrapped and double-box like brand new as well. The amps, all the foams, thick plastic wraps, manuals, etc., all looked brand new.
Yet, they were considered B-Stock and sold at a B-stock price.
So if I pay for a brand new price, and it doesn't look brand new to me (suspicious foam, wrapping, etc.), I refuse to pay brand new.
I don't need the manufacturer or store to tell me otherwise.
But that is me.
Some people don't mind something like that, but I do.
When I bought the Denon AVP-A1 from Onecall.com, it also looked like it had been opened. Plastic wraps were not sealed tight. There were some fingerprints/smudges on the LCD. I took some pictures and showed them to Onecall.
So I talked to Onecall and they said the box I got was 100% brand new --- that was how DENON packaged it.
When I talked to Denon, they said, "No way!". Brand new items will look 100% perfectly brand new --- no loose ends, no fingerprints whatsoever!"
So what good did either calls made?
Bottom line, I felt like it was NOT brand new and I returned the item for a full refund.
