does JBL make decent speakers? what about their lower end ones? i saw a pair of bookshelves on amazon that caught my eye for 259 and i really considered getting them.
I don't know about JBL home speakers, they're almost a different company from JBL Professional. I will say that Harman speakers tend to preach controlled directivity and good power response which is a good idea in real life rooms, but the on-axis voicing is not something I know anything about for JBL Home speakers. They could be great for all I know.

They're one of the few speaker companies out there that uses a 9khz crossover for a supertweeter though. I don't know the audible consequences of this, but that's definitely unusual and on paper might lead to vertical lobing, but it might also mean a better top octave than most 1" domes can produce in that price range. Without hearing it, how would one know?

I do like the use of the shallow waveguide though. I think the large waveguide in the JBL Pro speakers is a lot more optimal though, as it appears to match horizontal directivity at crossover frequency to the woofer.

also, those speakers would be really impractical due to them having their own volume controls and connecting via a line in. i would have to end up spending extra cash on a pre-amp just to control the volume without it being complicated.
I'm confused; what?

Just set the volume setting to max and control it from whatever you have them hooked up to - your TV, your receiver, or your computer's sound card.

Or does your receiver lack pre-outs?

eh.....unfortunately i dont have the money just yet, something i will have to save up. so ebay isnt gonna work.
upping budget to 1000 just for the lulz.
... will have to save for a very long time but whatever.
Question for you - what is your timeframe for these? Days, weeks, months? Recommendations given today might not apply six months from now.

BTW, I don't look all that often for NHT 1.5s, but I see them on eBay probably over 50% of the time that I look. So, I expect that they'll be around later on. They are most definitely not muddy - very clean sounding.

all i have is a stereo receiver atm and no it does not have pre outs. i guess i could give the JBLs a shot, amazon has a decent return policy and it would cost me nothing to return them and get a full refund.

as far as jbl goes, a couple times i've had a hard time being able to take them seriously.

why in the hell would you make a speaker with a driver crossed over at 20khz? most people with average hearing can't hear any higher then 18khz and 90% of all recordings are lucky to get past 22khz. sure, they may have rave reviews, people claiming they are natural sounding with fantastic imaging. but wtf with the 20khz+ tweeter. seriously.

It might use a 1st order crossover, which means it's putting out meaningful output as much as an octave below that (down to 10khz).

This is what they do with the Everest 66000. Remember, a crossover is not a brick wall filter.
