Hi. To reduce the output level of lower frequencies, you could try an inline high-pass crossover such as these FMOD 50 Hz units (available at different stores).

It only makes this sound when it's hitting lower frequencies hard. How do I stop it from trying to do anything less than 45 or so hz? The subwoofer is an energy es-10. It's about 10 years old. If anyone has any info at all that can help, it is much appreciated.

That sub is blown and past help. It sounds as if it has a cone voice coil separation. It could be the amp though producing very high distortion.

It needs to go to the recycling center. You are wasting time and effort with a filter.

The amp is a onkyo tx-sr508. I don't even have it half way up so it can't be producing that kind of distortion.

Should I even bother taking it apart or is this not worth the effort to replace?

Given its age and msrp, id lump that into the disposable category, no offense.

The amp that TLS Guy is talking about is the amp on your subwoofer, not the receiver.

Was the part where TLS Guy said...

...unclear in some way?

Sounds like it's time for you to go sub shopping. :)

It's getting slammed on the guys sidewalk I bought it from. Good thing I bought it with a group of onkyo speakers. Guy said they were sold "as is" even though he said great shape and barely used.

It's a lesson learned. Always audition used audio equipment.
