Its Too Bad.........

Audioholics did not test the HDMI audio performance on the DVD 2910 at the time of the review. They did not have an HDMI ready receiver. It turns out there is a flaw in the 2910 where PCM is output through the HDMI when you run a DTS or DD DVD disk. I have checked all the settings and I have the latest Denon authorized software update according to the Denon upgrade website. So I can't get a DTS or DD signal to register on my Yamaha receiver through the HDMI connection. I know its about 5 years late but a lot of us guys are just upgrading to HDMI equipment. My last Yamaha was an RX-V2095, no HDMIs. I get DD and DTS from the optical output of the Denon to the Yamaha.

Nobody seems to have a solution. I just found this out on my 2910 when I finally got around to hooking up the HDMI from the v1.1 output of the Denon to the 1.4a input of the Yamaha RX-A3000. Has anybody else had this problem with a Denon 2910, if they still have it? If so, did you solve it and if you did how did you solve it?

Hi. I'm guessing that you've been through the manual thoroughly, but I'll ask something just in case you missed it.

Have you set the "HDMI AUDIO SETUP" menu selection to "MULTI(NORMAL)"? That's the setting to have it output bitstream from the HDMI port.

Have you seen this thread at AVS? I'm guessing so, because it has a number of posts listing the same issue. Some people said that the newer firmware fixed their problem.

Which version of the firmware do you have?

Yeah. I am familiar with that thread. I read about 500 of the 2500 posts. I know there are a lot of other people with that problem but I could not find a solution. I did a google of the 2910 and the old Audioholics review came up. I was hoping to find a clue in there but you guys did not test it with an HDMI connection. Probably would of uncovered it then. That gave me the idea to post to find a solution.

I checked my Denon online upgrade status a couple of years ago at the Denon website and it said there are no updates for my model and serial number. I assume then I have the latest firmware upgrade. I tried again today, Saturday and the Denon website now does not recognize my serial number for a 2910-black. I am guessing the server is down over the weekend. Will try on Monday.

I am not sure which version of firmware I have other than that. How can I find out?

After some checking, this post on the AVS thread is the best that I found.
Yes. Thanks. I was able to figure out the firmware update from the directions in the thread:

ESS 6720-9
System 6768-2
DRV 030825
DSP 6770

I will see if I can figure out from the thread what the latest firmware update should be and compare.

thanks again. I will report back later on my findings.

I had sent Denon an email over the weekend. I gave them my firmware version: 6720-9. I could not get into their upgrade site. It would not accept my serial number. Anyway, Denon sent me an upgraded firmware version: ESS 8281-5. I followed the directions Denon sent me on how to install and the update went flawlessly. I will test the 2910 tonight to see if it now sends out a raw bitstream to my receiver.

I ran a DTS DVD in the 2910 and DTS showed up in the receiver display. It appears that the 2910 is now sending a raw bitstream signal to the receiver and the receiver is now decoding it. This is what I have become use to and all is good. So the firmware was out of date. An update to the firmware solved the problem.

Thanks for helping me. I appreciate.

Just curious. Does the Denon web site reflect the update that installed or is it also out of date? What will the next person do?

i could not log into the Denon website for updates to firmware. It would not accept my 2910 serial number. I ended up putting in a technical information request to Denon describing my problem and telling them I could not get into their website. The next day I received an email from Denon asking me what version of software I have. I told them, and in a couple of hours I received another email with the 8281-5 software upgrade, and a pdf of the installation instructions.

So the next person will have to contact Denon through their technical contact tool. I had checked my firmware update status a number of years ago and it said no update required. It did accept my serial number at the time. Now it does not. Don't know what is going on in that regard.

Thanks for asking.

That's why I asked to mitigate the next person's dilemma.
