An Interesting take on 3D...

Even if 3D & 2D movies were exactly the same price and the 3D glasses were more comfortable, I would still prefer to watch movies in 2D.

I still think 3D is pure gimmick, and it won't last.

I don't buy into 3D movies, just like I don't buy into 7.1, 9.1, & 11.2 surround sound.:D

For now, I'm sticking with 2D movies and 5.1 surround sound in my room.

On an off note, I sure love to see that DTS-HD MASTER light up on my Denon's LCD screen.:D

I don't go to movies, preferring to watch them at home. So, my perspective is for home viewing.

For the move from 2D to 3D, the closest audio comparison that comes to mind is the transition to surround sound. I'd put the switch from mono to stereo more in the same realm as the switch from black and white to color because it really didn't take any more planning on the users part. Surround sound, on the other hand, required placing speakers, setting speakers timings, and was really only optimal in one location. Oh, and when it first came out, it seemed to be used just to be used. It didn't follow the immersion approach described in that article. Years later, however, I think that surround sound is effective and isn't just gimmicky like it used to be. A lot of shows use it effectively to add an immersive element to the experience. Plus, electronics these days make is a lot easier to get a better audio experience in multiple locations within the viewing/listening area.

So, I think the things holding 3D back (kind of gimmicky, requires new equipment, requires glasses, not optimal in all viewing locations, and people aren't used to it) can be overcome. Will they be? I don't know.

I haven't been to a theater in at least 15 years and have no desire to go to one,
I am happy watching movies here at home,

and 3D is of no interest at all to me.

I do love my 7.1 though ! :D

5.1 Surround is just a cheap gimmick - I wont buy into it - you could get perfectly fine sound immersion from just two channels vinyl record

HD? Who needs it then I have perfectly fine 50" CRT tube tv in my living room

It's kind of a gimmick, but I try not to go overboard like 11.2 channels.

For a few months, I've been watching movies with just the 2 Orions + Rythmik subs in 2.1.

It has sounded just fine.

But I kind of missed those gimmick surround speakers a little, so I just had to go back to 5.1.:D

What I really, really missed A LOT was that DTS-HD MASTER display on my Denon's LCD!!!:D

The first day I got my new "pc speakers" I watched Avatar (1080p/dts) on my pc - I was blown away by quality of sound and immersion ...

For those unfortunate souls who get motion sickness, I hope they never make 3D the default standard phasing out 2D. That would suck royally.

Yeah, I know you're being sarcastic.... But here's the thing. I have a really nice stereo. As long as all the visual part of the show is in front of me, I just don't feel the need to have auditory things happening behind my head. If I turn my head around, all I see is my room.

I'm sure that the sound of invisible bullets zipping past your head is an exhilarating experience, but my personal opinion is "meh."

I'm not arguing with you, really, like I said, in proper setup stereo could do good job with sound imaging.

But properly done 5.1 shouldn't be flying bullets, but more like background sounds to help you immerse deeper

That's a shame b/c PLIIx is a significant improvement in sound compared to PLII, especially when listening to 2CH source material. You may want to give 7.1 a try before writing it off.

Well, it will not last in its current form but it will evolve over time perhaps into a holographic movie.

While I have not attended a demo of the 11.2 by Tomlinson Holman, what I read is that it is amazing:D

The only movie that I have seen in 3D where it was important and more than a gimmick is Cave of Forgotten Dreams. That film, as I have said before, is why 3D was invented.

It has made a believer out of me. But I don't need 3D generally, as it typically isn't very important. And I like watching at home without glasses anyway, so I will be happy to go to the theater again when Werner Herzog makes another film in 3D.
